Confusion continues...I have successfully restored a full image with AXTM...if that is what you are asking?

What Peter is asking (i.e., clean install OS but restore all non-OS related software, settings, etc.) is not currently possible as there is no way to exclude the system-related folders containing the clean install, or any specific folder(s) for that matter,...but as already stated I believe that Isso & the Team are working on folder exclusion features.

YES! Recovering an image without AX64 then installing AX64 and recovering a snapshot to the present is essentially the same as what I was asking (to me a fresh install of Windows and recovering an old image is the same for sake of argument).

If AX64 can do that, then awesome!

Okay, now what about the other case.

I use AX64 and FDISR, and exclude the System Volume file. I do an archive with FDISR, and then a restore with FDISR. I have an AX64 backup chain, and AX64 is installed, but the System Volume file is gone.

Where do I stand in this case?

I think you missed the point of the question. You have an AX64 setup with backups etc. What happens if the file in the System Volume folder, that keeps track of all the backups goes missing. That would be the effect of the last scenario I described.

    Hi Pete,

I think I understand what you are asking. If the tracking file for AX64 disappears for some reason, the results would be that your next backup would be a full one (not incremental). You would basically be staring a new backup chain. However your old backups would still be there and you could still restore them also. If memory serves me the old backups still appear in the backup browser. HTH...

As far as I know, it only keeps track of the AXTM folder contents, and it will just assume that you have never backed up before and when you next do it will attempt to create a full image as a 'first' backup.

If you remain the AXTM folder to something else, because you want to archive/keep the contents whilst AXTM will create and then work with the contents of that you can still go to the renamed folder and select a snapshot/backup from there to restore to...the loss of the file you mention does not prevent one from restoring.

That is my understanding...but perhaps best to await Isso or Froggie's (as VP of Marketing ;) ) to comment. :D

EDIT: Hi, puff...our posts on the same subject crossed...

    Hi n8,

I noticed in your sig that you are using Drive Snapshot as your imaging app. I use DS together with AX64 and haven't found any conflict whatsoever between the two. However, I also see that you use Shadow Defender and (most unfortunately) SD conflicts with AX64, so you would be well advised to choose either SD or AX64 (in other words, when 'D' precedes 'S' you're good to go with AX64, but when 'S' precedes 'D' you are not good to go with AX64). ;)

PS. I have no first hand knowledge about 1-Click Restore Pro.

Baldrick, thank you for your post. I appreciate your knowledge. I did, however, open up Process Lasso to attempt what you suggested. However, I cannot find AXTMapp.exe listed anywhere in "All Processes" or "Active Processes" tabs. Do I do this after I've opened up AX64? (i.e. after starting the program?)

    Thank you again.

    Hi Pete,
As Kent and Baldrick answered, the chain will be there but AX64 won't utilize it unless you perform an offline (full) image restore. After the offline restore AX64 will continue with its previous chain and you'll be able to perform online restores as usual.

    Hi Alex

I take that you do not have Automatic Backups checked (as if you do AXTM minimises to the sys tray) so you will indeed need to open the AXTM GUI/run the program...you should then see the .exe in the Process Lasso main window.

BTW, I have also done the same for AXTMImageBrowser.exe (which again needs to be running ;) )...just in case.

    HTH

    Regards, Balders

That sounds good as long as the full backup runs OK and will let my wife keep using her system. I was planning to install AX64 on her system (aso XP) and create a D partition. Yes, I know all about saving a backup on the main drive, but it is a RAID1 setup and is already protected against a single drive failure. This would however protect her data every hour. Every week/month...I could do a COPY of AXTM to an external eSATA drive in case.

See, I use ATI now and sure like the password protection that I believe is important when using an external drive. Also, when I do aa full backup it IS a full backup.

Have to say that I am not convinced by the usefulness of having a password protection option. But when I do a full backup it is also a full back...as I have explained earlier.

Check out the AXTM Feedback page to see the suggestions for future features...and where Isso & the Development Team are with them, and if you have any others or preferences then suggest them and/or vote for them, respectively.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!:argh: My head is spinning from the last 25 posts

To follow up on Panagiotis' previous answer...

Without the needed TRACKING FILE that AX64 TM uses (due to a "fresh install" of Windows or an FD-ISR restore without the needed tracking file), any RECOVERY operation under DeltaRestore (I like that, P), whether it's done under the LIVE Windows system or via the RECOVERY MEDIA , will do a standard image recovery... recovering the baseline and all incrementals needed to get back to the selected point of recovery... no high speed. And remember, since this complete restoration will be bringing back the original TRACKING FILE, continuning from this point using DeltaRestore will do the normal high speed type of operations.

Under the same conditions, a BACKUP operation will start from scratch (AX64 TM will even ask for SOURCE and DESTINATION partitions all over again just like a new install), building a new TRACKING FILE and saving a new baseline image. At this point, your AXTM folder will have all previous baselines and snaps and also the new baseline saved since then... feel free to go anywhere you'd like.

OK, I will look. Where is the MERGE function, as I do not see it?

    You're welcome Pete.:)
Thanks Froggy but better not use any name until Isso adopts one... or else the info in this thread will become more chaotic than already is.:D
On second thought until Isso decides what to use I'll call the online restore, "A Horse Restore with No Name".:p

Ahhh, OK...think I am with you now. ;) The merge functionality is built into AXTM and works automatically, checking if merging should take place as and when the system is found to be in an idle state.

There is currently no way for the user to adjust how this works/how & when merging takes place. However, there are a few suggestions over on the AXTM Feedback page to add some user-related configuration to the management of backups, which affects merging, etc.:

    http://feedback.ax64.com/forums/206...-add-an-option-to-keep-more-automatic-backups

    http://feedback.ax64.com/forums/206143-general/suggestions/3991427-add-backup-shemes

If you have some view as to how the app should handle merging going forward then why not either vote for the current suggestions or add your own if you feel additional features would be a good thing.

Has anyone ever encountered a problem with ax 64 that will not let you install it because it says that you 30 day free trial has ended? I tried to install recently and that was error message I got, which is strange because I don't remember installing it ever. I wanted to try out and see if I liked it better than some of the other similar applications I've used in the past but I have not been able to do that yet. I don't know yet if I want to purchase licensed for, without testing it. If that has happened anyone else, how did you get around it?
