Thanks for breaking it down for me. I had the general idea but your explanation makes it more clear to me. :)

Yet another question from a FD-ISR user (FD-ISR worshiper :D ). I am EXTREMELY itchy to make the jump, my fingers are practically twitching on the "download" box.

One question and I must admit that it has probably already been answered. I did an "advanced search" on Wilders for this particular forum and still only got about a gazillion hits.

So quickly if I may, are most of you Win7 users keeping System Restore turned on or disabled? How about for the 30-day trial period, System Restore on or disabled for that time period? And how about that 25% discount, how do I get it, I'd like to get it for both mine and my wife's system. (This program sounds TOO GOOD to be true but that is exactly what I said 12 years ago with FD-ISR).

    Thanks all a bunch,
    Acadia

    @Acadia

For the discount coupon code, just take a look at post 3280 in this thread. Just picked up mine yesterday ;)

    IMO, a great product.

@Acadia, having been an ardent APLHA and BETA tester of this software both using Win7 and XPpro, now using the official release, I have M$'s SYSTEM RESTORE turned off permanently. The effectiveness of this app's snapshot capability is way better than SYSTEM RESTORE can ever be. I did have it on early in the testing phase but it is now history.

There have been some cases amongst other non-AX64 TM users where apparently some M$ Updates were not performed without SYSTEM RESTORE being on... I have personally NEVER seen that problem.

To get your Wilder'sn 25% discount, just use the PERSONAL MESSAGE system here at the Forum and PM Isso for the discount. You can also ask for it through <info@ax64.com> and identify yourself as a Wilders member.

Play with it... you'll love it!

Arcadia, FWI I'm using WIN7 64x, and have my system restore turned off. I missed FD-ISR too 'till I installed my AX64 Time Machine. It's a fast download and you won't look back.

Shoot, this is what Wilder's is all about. Thanks Blackcat, RollbackFrog, and stapp for the answers. There may be even more excellent answers coming and thanks to them also. It makes sense to me that System Restore is no longer needed just like it was with FD-ISR.

Like I said and to repeat myself, this program sounds too good to be true but I said that with FD-ISR twelve years ago. :D

EDIT: just caught your reply before I posted mine, twl845, thanks!

    Hey Acadia!

You already know my worship status over our beloved FD-ISR. Shoot, i still have DVD saved snapshot disks that to this day work when applied on my XP boxes. This may help you jump in with the rest of us new AX64 Time Machine loyalists. AX64 is still just coming out of the gate courtesy Isso (bless that guy), and has planned even ever newer upcoming improvements for this spectacular imaging/snapshot masterpiece.

And with the newer windows overtaking the scene as usual we been desperately needing a real worthy alternative to FD a long time and now it's here!

You just have to get right in on this Acadia. Personally it's every bit as exciting as when Leapfrog first sprang First Defense that got so much attention and drew such an enormous audience and customers.

Absolutely correct explanation. Think of merging as simply a deletion operation, i.e. when you want to delete a backup you merge the newer one into it.

Totally agree. In fact one of the reasons why I started working on AX64 was that I needed a dead simple program that I could install on the PCs of my noob friends/relatives and forget about "Oh, I'm having problems with my PC, please come and fix it!! You are a programmer, it should be an easy job for you!" :)

Why does everyone think that the programmers are good at fixing PCs??

    Acadia,

Thank you for your interest. You have nothing to lose: the trial version is fully functional and you can easily install and uninstall it - your machine won't be affected.
Kudos to the other Wilders members for answering your question. I'll just post the link to System Restore compatibility in our KB:

    twl845,

It's in the progress, however takes more time than I was thinking. The main issue is moving the existing data (KB, Ideas) to the new platform. I hope we'll be able to finish it soon.

I have been using AX64 for about 2.5 months now and have not turned off system restore. Not because I am concerned about ax64 but rather because I just did not get around to it. Must remember to do so as there really is no reason to have it on. If it is left on snapshots will be a bit larger than otherwise so if you want to leave it one that would be fine too.

Oh yes, I am running Win 7 64 bit.

Why does AX64 images take up so much space after a while again ? Like after one day of making images.

Like for example I made a base image which is around 8 to 9 GB, which is to be expected. Then if I create more images a few minutes or hours after that they are only 26 MB to 800 MB.

Though if I wait a day later the next image is instead like 2 to 4 GB. Why is this ? Even when I didn't change much.

Because the subsequent snaps are only recording the changes to the drive since the previous snap. If you, say, added 200 gigs of music to your drive between snaps the next snap would be quite large for sure. But since normal day to day computing does not make a lot of changes to the drive snaps tend to be small.

You personally may not have changed much, but do you know of all activities of Windows? For instance a new service pack for Office 2010 was issued this week. Over 600MB is size. And if you have System Restore enabled, wouldn't that account for a large amount of change?

What about system defrag? Got this running regularly?

No one understands what I am talking about :(

At least True Image doesn't do this.

    Hi max2,

The backup size of 2 to 4 GB (considering that you changed a little) is very big. It may happen sometimes if Windows installs lot of updates, or if you defragment your drive. But it shouldn't happen constantly, unless you have a background defragmenter or other program that constantly writes to disk.

Please create a ticket by using "Feedback & Support" button in the top left corner of www.ax64.com page. I'll send to you a small utility that shows a list of files that exist in a specific backup. That list might allow us to figure out what's happening.

    Used the contact support tab.
