I just downloaded an installer using IE, and when I clicked on the download link, I was given no Run option.

Is this a standard feature of IE 11? Is there anyway to enable the Run option again?

I like the Run option for when I'm downloading software and don't want to keep the installer. Since I never do any scanning of my downloads before opening them, I have no need for a download to be saved in my Downloads folder, unless I want to keep the installer for reinstalling it later.

I downloaded another exe file, and the Run option was there, so it was a case of IE not liking the file I was trying to download. I also got the message "This type of file could harm your computer." when downloading the first file.

However, once the file was downloaded, the Run option was there, so it seems rather stupid to not have the run option when download, and it to appear when the download is completed. A quick Google search revealed no solutions.

I get Run, Save and Cancel when downloading an installer. My IE version is 11.0.9600.16518

But, it depends on what you are actually downloading - IE does not like some exe files and removes the Run option.

File>open and then browse to the exe file works also.

I know that, but I can run the downloaded exe file from IE once it's finished downloading. But, I want to be able to run and not save it when I start the download, so that I only gets saved in IE's temporary folder, and will automatically be launched one the download has completed.

I've never seen IE removing the Run option when downloading an exe file. I got no idea how to reclaim the Run option in these cases. I've even tried Googling. Sorry but it's not my cup of tea.:(

The run option is removed when you download an unknown, suspicious file. As you've already said, you got that warning already.

You can run it anyway by clicking "more options" or something like that.

No, I couldn't do that. For some files download in IE, you need to click on more options to show the Run option.

However in my case, the Run option was there after downloading the file, but not before downloading it. This, is the problem.

Unless it is known malware blocked by the Smartscreen URL filter, I don't see why the run option would be gone.

The file needs to be downloaded to be hashed by AppReputation, which is why that option disappears after download.

    Download IE.png
As you can see, there is no Run option or Save and run.

I highly doubted it would but it was worth a shot, eh. See help at MS Answers - http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us

Thanks for you help. I will download the same file on another laptop and see if an IE issue, or just something specific to my Windows install.

Keep in mind that if the website is running IIS that the run option can be removed from the link and that if you see a situation where there is no "run" option that it may be by the design of the website programmer.

I just fixed this after doing some more Google searching.

I had do a Reset in IE and check "Delete personal settings."

Previously when I did a reset I did not check this.
