This is once again getting out of hand ..

Why can't people just agree that everything is just fine if they have a latest version of a well known anti-virus, that is developed by some established and reputable company. But no, they want a swiss army knife that heats up their car in the morning says hello and brings a warm cup of coffee for them.

Most of these companies have been doing this for over a decade, have whole departments for analyzing malware, support, research and developement etc. but still people need to question if this is good enough.

It's like comparing some japanese family cars from the late 90s, honda, nissan, mitsubishi and toyota .. they all are almost the same size, have almost same features, fuel consumption is almost equal, all are known as reliable, and engines have almost same amount of horse power. Is it really worth it to compare which is the best when the major difference in these is probably color and register number.

I believe this started out as a fairly mild discussion about the legitimacy and accuracy about this particular antivirus test.

Somewhere along the line, that changed, however, as some members began to hurl around rhetoric and vitriol about bias instead of subjectively examining the facts itself. Add to the mix some individuals who repeatedly seek to emphasize how enlightened and transcendental their thought processes are, and we have what you see at the moment...

I disagree, the Toyota Supra had 340bhp, the Mitsu 3000GT VR4 had 320bhp, the latest Subaru STi and Mitsu Evo blow Lambos and Porsches on track. ;)

    Exactly.

Folks, let's get a grip on reality here. The simple fact of the matter is that most/all of us are not in possession of the "facts" really required to hold this type of discussion. I really don't believe anyone is, even industry workers, since it involves user specific constraints that they cannot generically claim to know either. All that we can supply are impressions borne of our own experience. We all need to acknowledge that this is very incomplete information and that the vitriol and over the top hyperbole borne out in these threads starts with the false premise that there is a singular correct answer. I really don't see that as true.

Regardless of perspective, how about we all try to be a bit more civil to fellow members.

Hmm even there, Mazda had the 125bhp Protege' which did .89 on skidpad which was the same figure for a 911 turbo. It als had a peppy 125bhp engine so for a family car, it could dust quite a few BMW 3 series as well as others like Jag XJ6 etc.

...and let's leave the subject of cars while we're at it. Thanks.

You are making a claim to knowledge that members cannot "know" the facts and that claim itself you cannot know with any more certainty than any other claim made on this thread.

You of course have the right as an administrator to claim anything you want, and you may be correct about impressions not being facts etc., but still the epistemology of the value of a specific AV is not necessarily unknowable or subjective.

Really...., logically that means you believe someone out there posting in this thread has complete knowledge with respect to any and all products, users, and malware.

A person using a poor antivirus, who never experiences an 'infection', will say their antivirus is excellent.

A person using an excellent antivirus, who experiences an 'infection', will say their antivirus is poor.

Doesn't matter which one you use, as long as you don't get 'infected', you'll be happy. :)

You know, some of you really ought to sit back in your chairs and read through some of the threads that have been posted here in the last few months. The quality of this website has gone down, and it is neither the mods fault or any specific members fault. The fault lies with utter crap like what's been posted in this thread. You're here to help others, especially new people coming here wanting to understand security and other computer-related things, yet when the newcomers show up, they have to wade through 5 pages of 12 year old bickering to get any useful information, if the thread ends up containing any at all.

It's not just AVs, it firewalls, it's anti-malware, even browsers are subject to know-it-alls with attitude issues (or self confidence ones) literally getting mad when someone posts even the SLIGHTEST negative about their favorite app. To those people I say this, don't you all understand that it's software made up of lines of text and numbers? It's not your mother, father, children, or grandma, it's freaking code shrink-wrapped in a cardboard box.

Avira vs Dr Web vs Norton vs Avast, and on and on....who bloody cares? If YOU don't like a brand name and it isn't on YOUR system, why the hell would you even bother to start insulting others who DO like it? It doesn't hurt YOU, so shut up and find something more worthwhile in life to groan about.

Blue's right, very very few of us here can claim we're "experts" at anything. If your name isn't in yellow, don't try to act like it is. If you don't like AV Comparatives or any of the other widely known testing centers, fine, nothing wrong with that. But don't come in here acting like you have some super duper knowledge and your homegrown test is any superior.

    Rant over.:thumbd:

And with these last two good observations, thread closed.

Maybe it's time to start disallowing the "Hey, new test result from XYZ - cool!" threads.
