While these tests are far from perfect, not least due to the artificial environment of them, taken en masse they do offer some guidance.Personally I like Matt's tests at remove-malware.com simply because they're performed in something like a real world scenario.

What is difficult to miss though is the constantly high detections from Avira, however or whenever tests are performed.Either they are just unbelievably lucky,in which case that's the kind of luck I'd want protecting my system;or it really does it's job.The onus is on those who dispute Avira's quality to provide evidence that on real systems used by real people it fails badly.

And so will I and even if Avira goes down a notch or two in the future, Avira still would be my choice, so far with the consistency they have displayed, I doubt that time is close.

Yep, those test seem to pop out and have different classifications, although Avira ans A2 score high on most.

Well I see people using stuff and swearing by them even though the product in question have voluntarily withdrawn from from the hill climb so I guess Avira still deserves the break, at least they come to the hill climb and not run from it, same goes for all those who show up to the hillclimb.;)

From what I have seen, Avira seems to consistently have the best detection capabilities of anything out there, and I am an Avast! user. I like Avast! for its frequency and ease of updating, the support forum where I can easily interact and get help from the Avast! principals, and other knowledgable security people, and the history I have with them fixing minor issues within a couple of days and helping with workarounds in the same way. It also is among the better detectors, but usually not the best. I expect that Avira and AVG also provide excellent support but haven't tried either for a few years. Look and freel and support preferences are hard to quantify. I wouldn't argue with the reports that say I will probably get a few more malwares tossed to Prevx Edge and my HIPS than I would if I were to switch to Avira. But if your Grandma tells me it is down at the bottom of the pile, I would probably suggest she get new glasses. And if Avira showed as down there too, I might suggest she lay off the sauce while testing. :)

I find the comments/excuses made by the "fanboys" the best part of any AV test:-they're great!

This may appear off topic but I really think it is time we stopped bashing any test because there are pros and cons about every test out there. The user can believe what he or she wants to believe. C.S.J. likes to talk about AV-comparatives a whole lot, but what's to say that AV-test, Checkvir is not similarly flawed? Just because we didn't hear it doesn't mean it's not true, as there are "expert" comments on virtually every testing organization, both for and against.

In the end all one has to do is trust the product he or she uses - if it has performed well now, there's no reason why it won't do so in the future. You like the product, the support - then keep using it. Tests are, ultimately, just a guideline to determine the AV of choice. There are tons of other factors too - ultimately whatever suits YOU and YOUR situation/environment/region/internet identity the best is what you want to keep using! :)

With that I really feel all the comments about testing organizations need to stop because there is way too much smoke and daggers, uncertainty and comments with opposite viewpoints. In the end, it should be more than obvious that every test is in some way flawed and that one can never get a "perfect" result at anything. With that in mind, you should look at the tests with a light mind. Also, the attitude of the tester matters because at least you know whether he/she is honest or not - let's face it, it takes a whole lot of work to make a single AV test and the frank truth is that we wouldn't have done any better if we were doing it ourselves......So let's give them all a break......:)

comparative tests are just comparative tests - the real test is how the product and the company behind it has helped you with problems you have personally encountered. And that is what should be primary when choosing an AV product (e.g. how fast does a company help when you get infected by undetected malware, signature update rate, does the company provide a cleaner tool in case of an infection, whether there are performance problems or bugs and how willing or fast the company is in fixing such issues, etc.). :)

I think I have gone way too off topic with this post, but I did want to get this off my head.....I'm sorry if I ruffled any feathers or hurt/angered anyone with my comments, it was never my intention.

Tests are a good yardstick for a novice looking for an AV, then one's personal experience with support further builds confidence and trust in product.

Frankly that's one of the main reasons I come here. It's great to see the extent that some will go to rationalize the fact they are fans of a lousy AV. :D

You are doing your best to make the choice of an AV appear to be totally subjective. That premise is correct only if the fact that each user chooses based on varying criteria. However, there are objective tests that show some AVs to be consistently good at detection (two come to mind such as NOD32 and Avira). If detection is critical, it is not subjective as there is very little deviation from the mean in several of the tests. That is, the best at detection have been good at doing it for a long time and they do it consistently.

Re: intersting anti virus tests results ! look inside

Thing is that I feel each test should be taken as a "scenario"; I don't deny that there are good AV products and not-so-good AV products in terms of detection, but once a certain threshold of detection is reached I feel there is practically little difference in real-world protection rates. Since so many tests show results of varying extremities, I feel users should just trust/use the test that fits their personal "scenario" the best and not waver because some other test did not show such a good score for that product. Ultimately detection is important, but there are other things also which I described.......it is not the be-all and end-all, that is what I wanted to say, I guess I have troubles coming out clean with my thoughts :D

And indeed there are products that show consistency in performance, all the better (or worse, if you're a pessimist :D) for them. But what I wanted to say is that one shouldn't ditch an AV especially if it has served you well because the various tests show inconsistency, and I feel one shouldn't go on bashing products or testing organizations based on loose comments from people with no official or confirmed proof. :)

Can somebody please explain how you become "a fan of an AV product":-its just a tool designed to try and keep your PC malware free(or as free as possible)if the one your using stops doing its job move to another:-If you had a screwdriver/spanner that became useless would you carry on using it out of sentimentality?

If they have more than a fan interest that might help to explain it. Kind of like free advertising. Or it could be like being a fan of the Detroit Lions football team this year. They did not win a game and have a lousy team, but what the hell- you're a fan!

People are fans of brands of drills and chainsaws, cars, so why not anti-virus? I get a little incredulous when I see references on websites to "our beloved xxxxxx" and little professions of love and fealty on the posts, but as long as they don't send suicide bombers against the apostates and infidels it seems like an OK hobby. ;)

'Badges? We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges! I don't have to show you any stinkin' badges!"
Read "tests" for "badges",and that pretty much sums up the attitude.
Some of the cutest replies from those rejecting tests,or more properly, test results, are:
"Well, I have used this Av for years, and I have never been infected!!"
"Ok,so ever test indicates my AV cant detect its way out of a paper bag,but I trust (Insert name of a CEO or Developer)."
"Yeah, its a work in progress but when THE NEXT BETA,comes out, it is going to leave the others in the dust!!"

How I wish I could tap into all that credulity,I would never need to work another day.

Seriously I've seen seemingly reasonable people suddenly fly into a written rage at anything negative regarding their beloved.
