Rumor mill: Are you considering buying one of Intel’s newly revealed 10th-gen Comet Lake desktop processors? If so, you’ll need a new Z490 motherboard that comes with the LGA 1200 socket, but if rumors are to be believed, these will only support a couple of generations of processor families, with 12th-gen Alder Lake CPUs switching to the LGA 1700 socket.

Soon after the new Core i9-10900K CPU was officially revealed last week, we heard that the 400-series motherboards it requires would also support 11th-gen Rocket Lake processors, which is when Intel will finally catch up with AMD by offering PCIe 4.0 support.
According to recent reports, lit-tech, a Taiwanese company that provides voltage regulation test tools to Intel in the Asia-Pacific market, has confirmed the LGA 1200 socket will only be used for two generations of processors.

With LGA 1700, however, there are rumored to be some big changes, including the chip shape changing from a square to a rectangle (45.00mm x 37.5mm), meaning no support from existing boards or coolers.

The CPUs are said to mark Intel finally moving away from the 14nm process node and onto 10nm++.

Good ol' leakster momomo_us was able to grab a snap of the information there about the future Alder Lake platform(s).

The leak confirms that Intel is testing, or close to testing, power delivery and voltage regulation (VR) of the new LGA 1700 socket using the Gen5 VR Test Tool kit.

Rocket Lake-S, the immediate successor to Comet Lake-S, could be the first Intel platform to debut PCIe 4.0 support according to a leaked features slide (via Videocardz). Hence, the recent inclusion of PCIe 4.0 support on Gigabyte Z490 motherboards makes sense as it could be in anticipation of Rocket Lake-S and sort of confirms the existence of PCIe 4.0 compatibility on the next-gen Intel desktop lineup.

There is also the mention of Alder Lake P but currently, no concrete information exists about it.

The iGPU design plans for Intel's upcoming Alder Lake have leaked out (Sisoft via TumApisak) and show a 33% increase in EU count as compared to the existing flagship. Interestingly, it looks like Intel has not decided to double down on integrated graphics (compared to TigerLake) for example based on this data.

This might be disappointing news for some (I know it is for me) since it means that the GPU will be less powerful than the Tiger Lake iGPU expected to launch next month but there is a silver lining (as always).

It actually does make sense from a business perspective because anyone buying a high-end S-class core from Intel will be equipping that with a discrete GPU and a high-end onboard GPU will only increase costs for the customer.
To put this in perspective, this is a strategy utilized by AMD processors that don't ship with an iGPU at all.

Of course, the most interesting thing about the Alder Lake processors isn't going to be the iGPU or even the 10nm process - it's going to be the new big and small architectural design. This design coupled will allow the company to increase power efficiency significantly without trading away raw performance and will be the perfect architecture for mobility.

Alder Lake's big and small cores coupled with Tiger Lake's successor's iGPU is where the real battle for integrated graphics is going to be fought.

There has been another sighting of Intel's elusive 12th-gen Alder Lake-S CPU. Notable hardware leaker @Tum_Apisak spotted the silicon's benchmark scores uploaded to the Geekbench database Monday evening.
The Geekbench 5 results list it with 16 cores/24 threads running at 1.4GHz, consistent with a previous sighting on the SiSoft Sandra benchmarking database back in October.

Back in April, an alleged Intel roadmap had leaked, according to which the company appeared to be planning the upcoming 12th gen Alder Lake-S desktop launch for mid-Q3 or Q4 of this year. This may still be true, but a new roadmap has leaked today that's dated back to January, containing information on Alder Lake vPro parts. According to it, Intel's Alder Lake platforms - both the desktop-based Alder Lake-S as well as the mobile Alder Lake-P -, might not be arriving before Q1 of 2022.

Lastly, there is a slide relating to the Windows support for Alder Lake platforms, according to which the 12th gen Intel processors are supported by Windows 10 version 20H2 and newer.

The Intel Z690 chipset is expected to support both DDR4 and DDR5 memory, and there are rumors suggesting Alder Lake will be the first platform to support PCIe 5.0. That said, SSD and graphics card manufacturers have yet to come up with hardware that can take advantage of the new spec.

Alder Lake will be Intel's first processors to arrive using a big.LITLE design similar to Arm's, which combines high-powered cores with energy-efficient ones. Intel has taken the wraps off its Alder Lake system-on-a-chip, which is the company's first processor to incorporate its efficient and performance cores.

With the new Intel 7 process, previously known as 10nm Enhanced Super Fin, Intel is able to fit four cores on the same die space of a Skylake core.
Intel is boasting that the core will have more accurate branch prediction thanks to its 5,000 entry branch target cache, a 64KB instruction cache to "keep useful instructions close".

To get the efficient and performance cores working together with operating systems, Intel has created a new scheduler it is calling Thread Director, and has been working with Microsoft to optimise it for Windows 11.

"Built directly into the hardware, Thread Director provides low-level telemetry on the state of the core and the instruction mix of the thread, empowering the operating system to place the right thread on the right core at the right time," Intel states.
Alder Lake will support DDR5-4800, LP5-5200, DDR4-3200, and LP4x-4266 memory, as well as 16 lanes of PCIe Gen 5. Intel said the compute fabric of Alder Lake can handle 1000GBps, I/O fabric can do 64GBps, and memory fabric can hit 204GBps.
The new architecture will power chips that draw nine watts up to 125 watts of power.

Today, a real-world application test in the form of Adobe After Effects was spotted by Twitter leakster Benchleaks in Puget Systems' PugetBench database.

Among the three test results of the Core i9-12900K mentioned earlier, the best Render Score is around 11.5% faster than the 11900K's result. (click on the result images below to enlarge)
However, previous rumors have suggested that Alder Lake-S is also able to clock just as high as Rocket Lake-S; and in that case, the results may be somewhat disappointing, at least for AE users, if these were being run at the potential final retail speeds suggested by such rumors.

Intel Core i9 12900HK mobility CPU also unexpectedly beat the Apple M1 Max when it comes to the Geekbench multi-core benchmark, scoring 13,256 vs 12,753 for the Apple processor. It is also 45% faster than the Intel 11980HK which only scored 9,149 points.

The Alder Lake processor was tested on Windows 11, which of course has new optimizations for the Alder Lake chip architecture with a big.SMALL and highly efficient “e-cores” and support for Intel’s new Thread Director technology.

With the launch so close, it seems fellow outlet VideoCardz was able to get its hands on purported slides that showcase the performance and prices of Alder Lake-S early. The first of the two slides shows the gaming performance of the flagship Alder Lake-S SKU, the Core i9-12900K. The processor will be a 16 core, 24 thread (16C/24T) part and it is easily able to beat the 16C/32T Ryzen 9 5950X with margins of up to 30%. The slide also features the last-gen Rocket Lake-S flagship Core i9-11900K.

Moving on from the performance aspect, alleged pricing details for the Alder Lake-S lineup are also out. Apparently, the flagship Core i9-12900K will come in at an MSRP of $589 which is $50 higher than what Intel launched the previous-gen Rocket Lake-S at. Intel released its 12th gen Alder Lake-S desktop processors last week and although the micro-architecture has been optimized to work well on Windows 11, the company noted in its Alder Lake developer guide that existing Digital Rights Management software (DRMs) in games would require updates for them to properly support Alder Lake's Performance Hybrid architecture, which Intel calls Big-Bigger.

Addressing the developers, the company said:

If your existing or upcoming game uses a DRM middleware, you might want to contact the middleware provider and confirm that it supports hybrid architectures in general, and the upcoming Intel ADL platform in particular. Due to the nature of modern DRM algorithms, it might use CPU detection, and should be aware of the upcoming hybrid platforms.
Here's how Intel describes the problem:

Certain third-party gaming Digital Rights Management (DRM) software may incorrectly recognize 12th Generation Intel® Core™ Processors efficient-cores (E-cores) as another system. This prevents games implementing that DRM software from running successfully. Games may crash during launch or gameplay, or unexpectedly shut down.

Today, the company published a full list of affected games, mostly Denuvo-based titles, and also stated that a software fix is being rolled out by the DRM vendor.

A workaround has also been posted that enables Legacy Game Compatibility Mode for several titles on Windows 10. For such games, Intel recommends that you either update to Windows 11 to resolve the issue or use this Intel-provided workaround called Scroll Lock workaround.

Today the company has posted a full list of titles that are affected by DRM and most if not all seem to be Denuvo-based. The games below in bold are the ones affected in Windows 11 while the rest are facing problems on Windows 10.

Intel has reiterated that it is working with Denuvo to fix the issue. In fact, a software fix has been identified and is being rolled out.
Meanwhile, a workaround for some of the other titles has been identified that are affected on Windows 10 only.

Leaked Alder Lake Core i3 would be first interesting budget CPU in almost 2 years

But it has been particularly tough if you're trying to put together a PC on a budget, both because "budget graphics cards" have essentially ceased to exist and because neither Intel nor AMD has released a compelling CPU for under $150 since early 2020.
That streak may end soon, according to a retail leak spotted by Tom's Hardware.

The most interesting of those chips for budget builders is the i3-12100F, a quad-core, 8-thread processor that was listed for around $120. Entry-level quad-core desktop CPUs are an excellent choice for budget desktops—fast enough for all kinds of basic browsing and productivity apps but also able to handle games and heavier apps like Photoshop or Lightroom in a pinch. It was just a few years ago that quad-core processors were the best that most people could get, and most software still runs well on them.

With four of Alder Lake's performance cores (or P-cores), the i3-12100F should provide a substantial single- and multithreaded performance bump over the 10th-generation Core i3 chips, though most likely at the cost of higher power consumption.
These cheaper desktop chips won't include any of Intel's efficiency cores (or E-cores), which provide a nice multithreaded performance boost to the top-tier Core i9 and Core i7 Alder Lake chips.

Whether you'll actually be able to find and buy the i3-12100F once it's released is anyone's guess, though.

Gigabyte releases tool to fix Alder Lake's DRM issues

In brief: After Intel revealed a list of games that don’t work with its new Alder Lake CPUs due to DRM conflicts, owners of Gigabyte’s Z690 motherboards can now address the issue by using the company’s Gigabyte DRM Fix Tool.

At the start of November, Intel confirmed that certain games don’t work with Alder Lake. Chipzilla said more games run into problems when Alder Lake is used with Windows 10—as opposed to Windows 11—and while most of these are older titles, some newer ones such as Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order are also affected.

The problem stems from Digital Rights Management (DRM) software incorrectly recognizing Alder Lake’s efficient-cores (E-cores) as another system. This can prevent games from launching, cause crashes during gameplay, or shut them down unexpectedly.

But the Gigabyte DRM Fix Tool (download here) allows anyone to switch the E-cores on and off easily through the utility's UI. The only requirement is that users' motherboards have the latest firmware installed.

While the tool only works with Gigabyte Z690 mobos, don’t be surprised to see other manufacturers follow suit by releasing their own versions of the utility.
Gigabyte provided a list of all its Z690 motherboards and the latest BIOS version for each product.

Intel has been killing it, at least on the specs sheet, with the launch of Alder Lake-S desktop processors. With support for DDR5 and PCI Express 5.0, team blue has played its cards right. Today, Intel's Executive Vice President Gregory Bryant tweeted that Intel is shipping the upcoming Alder Lake-P mobile processors to OEMs to integrate them into upcoming laptops.

Alder Lake-P will allegedly be available in two primary core configurations. Out of the two, a lower-end SKU might feature two Golden Cove Performance (P) cores and eight Gracemonth Efficiency (E) cores. The higher-end one might feature six performance cores along with eight efficiency cores.

As reported by Igorslab, Intel is reportedly killing off AVX-512 enablement on Alder Lake CPUs for good. To do this, the chipmaker will likely release a new microcode update to all Alder Lake-supported motherboards that prevent any AVX-512 enablement workarounds from being successful. Additionally, the company focused hard on bringing AVX-512 to mainstream consumers with Rocket Lake; however, that won't be the case with Alder Lake.

What's even more bizarre is that performance from the AVX-512 instruction set, in specific workloads, is very effective and efficient.
IgorLabs also tested the strengths of AVX-512 on Alder Lake and found it to be excellent.

Ultimately, Intel didn't fuse off the AVX-512 instruction set on Alder Lake's silicon, and the chipmaker is doing its best to decisively kill off AVX-512 functionality for good in the near future.

We can speculate why Intel is doing this, but ultimately, it's best to prepare yourself for this change.

You can of course stick with an existing motherboard BIOS, but at some point most boards will incorporated the updated microcode that disables AVX-512 support.

12th-gen Intel Core laptop CPUs bring up to 14 cores to high-end portables

In addition to announcing new desktop chips, Intel is also expanding its Alder Lake architecture to laptops. Intel has announced 12th-generation Core chips for everything from high-end gaming laptops to thin-and-light ultrabooks, with low-end Pentiums and Celerons thrown in for good measure.

These laptop chips use Intel's new hybrid processor architecture, which combines larger, faster performance cores with smaller, more efficient cores (P-cores and E-cores, respectively). How many P-cores and E-cores you get depends on the processor you're buying, and you'll need an operating system that supports Intel's "Thread Director" technology to get the most performance out of the chips. Windows 11 supports it now, Linux support is in the works, and Windows 10 doesn't have it and won't be getting it.

Intel's H-series processors are its top-performing laptop GPUs, and 12th-generation H-series chips will begin shipping in laptops starting in February. We've provided the tables with all of the core counts and clock speeds above, but to quickly summarize the differences between the eight different H-series CPUs:

The Core i9 models include six P-cores and eight E-cores, plus an integrated GPU with 96 execution units (EUs). The i9-12900HK is the sole overclockable laptop processor across Intel's entire 12th-gen lineup.

The Core i7 chips also use six P-cores and eight E-cores, but with somewhat lower clock speeds. Their GPUs also include 96 EUs, but the lowest-end i7-12650H only uses 65 EUs.

The Core i5 chips use four P-cores and eight E-cores, which lowers the maximum turbo power from 115 W to 95 W. Their GPUs include 80 EUs, except for the 48 EU i5-12450H.
