If you’re looking to upgrade your rig or pick up a new desktop, it may be worth waiting until next year. In a Medium post, Intel has confirmed that its 11th generation “Rocket Lake” CPUs will be arriving in the first quarter of 2021.

They’ll also finally match AMD’s third-generation Ryzen chips with PCIe 4.0 support. Clearly, Intel is trying to splash a bit of cold water on AMD’s Ryzen 5000 CPUs, which are launching tomorrow and will serve as Rocket Lake’s main competitor.

Intel’s confirmation comes a day after Videocardz reported on some key rumors about the Rocket Lake CPUs.
The site claims they’ll launch in March, feature a faster “Cypress Cove” core architecture, and max out with an 8-core offering.

Judging from some early GeekBench scores, Wccftech predicts these new chips will be an evolutionary leap ahead of the 10th-gen CPUs. They’ll reportedly have a 5GHz boost speed and be Intel’s farewell to its aging 14nm architecture.

Intel has revealed more information about its 11th-generation Rocket Lake S-Series desktop processors, expected to arrive in Q1 next year. Unlike the 10th-generation chips with up to 10 cores, the new model will top out at 8 cores, as expected. However, they’ll gain in efficiency via an architecture dubbed Cypress Cove, which combines Ice Lake core and Tiger Lake graphics architecture — but uses a 14-nanometer, rather than 10-nanometer scale.

With up to 8 cores rather than 10 on the 10th-gen Core i9-10900K, the chips should be attractive to gamers that depend more on clock speeds. Cypress Cove will allow for “double digit” gains in IPC performance, Intel said

As Intel already revealed, the next-gen chips will match AMD’s latest CPUs with the addition of PCIe 4.0, with up to 20 PCIe 4.0 lanes.
Other new features will include support for new media controllers, including HEVC (VP9) at up to 4K60p 12-bit 4:4:4, and AV1 at 4K60 10-bit 4:2:0. System with the chips will also support DP1.4a, HDMI 2.0b, and HBR3, with up to three 4K60p or two 5K60p displays. Finally, Intel has added VNNI for improved AI performance.

Rocket Lake should allow Intel to at least keep up with AMD until its 10-nanometer chips finally arrive.
We’ll have to wait for the chips to launch in Q1 of 2021 to learn the price and other details, however.

We’ve known since October that Intel’s upcoming Rocket Lake S desktop CPUs will only support up to 8-core chips, down from last year’s 10-core i9-10900K. The real question is if that step back will be worth it.

Well, Intel is now claiming the new Rocket Lake S chips are up to 19 percent faster than their predecessors. Gamers care more about single-threaded performance and overall speeds, after all, so losing two CPU cores may be worth it for higher FPS results.

While we’re still waiting for more details on Rocket Lake S hardware, Intel gave us a few more tidbits at CES. They should deliver up to 50 percent better integrated graphics performance, and they’ll feature AI integration with Intel’s Deep Learning Boost tech.

The flagship Core i9-11900K will reach up to 5.3GHz like last year, and it’ll support faster DDR4-3200 RAM. Rocket Lake S chips will support PCIe 4.0, and they’ll be backwards compatible with Intel’s existing 400 series chipsets, as well as the upcoming 500 series motherboards.
