Heh, the minor desktop and sound problems creep in when you are not expecting them. :ninja:

ok, here is to muddy the waters further:

I tried to follow Pandlouk's suggestion to delete the prefetch file (not knowing which files to choose, I chose all :D ). When I copied/updated the secondary from the primary, IR showed 4 errors relating to corrupted files. At that point I decided to backpedal :doubt: - since both my primary and secondary now were compromised, I used an archive to update my secondary to the status before touching the prefetch files ( I was still in my primary at that time). I then rebooted into secondary, changed my desktop again (coming from the archive it was an earlier one), copied from secondary to primary and then rebooted back to primary.
This time everything is as expected and even the desktop shows the latest version though I don't know why this is not consistently either working or not working.

Would just like to add something here. I'm not a current IR user but am reasonably familiar with lots of Windows settings. When a lot of settings are changed, the permanent change does not occur until the system is rebooted (it occurs during the "Saving settings" mode of the restart/shutdown).

If you've changed some settings and have not rebooted between then and your snapshot update (I told you, I'm not an IR user... maybe a reboot is required for the snap update), those settings just may not make it.

    Just thinking out loud here...

    Hi Froggie

I think you have a good point. When I was testing this after making the settings, I did reboot to see if they took. Then indeed IR worked as expected.

Test it. When I tested I inadvertently did reboot to be sure the setting took and I couldn't duplicate the problem.

ok thanks a bunch and so A64 does not have a boot before windows option I take it.. I am trying IR with RestoreIt 2014 at the moment and will see how dat goes. Even though both take over the before windows boot and I see IR's boot option, if I click on it I still, get RestoreIT's restore options..

Ax64's latest version does in fact have a boot option to go into a disk based RE. I wouldn't chance using both of them, and given a choice IR wins hands down.

To further support what the froggie said about windows, I just discovered something interesting, as well as solving a dumb thing.

I have MS Office 2010 Professional on my machines. One of the programs I use a lot is One Note. Office installs it to auto start, which I find annoying.

So I go into MSconfig startup, and uncheck the startup entry for one note. I uncheck it check apply and exit and reboot. And sure enough on the next boot the little pest is back. I done this several times to no avail.

But today, I went into msconfig, unchecked the box, clicked apply and this time did an exit without the reboot. Then I reentered misconfig verified the One Note entry was unechecked, and exited. Then I manually rebooted. Bingo the start up was gone.

WIndows indeed is a strange bird.

BINGO, BINGO, BINGO. Stupid me, I just realized why my sounds were not being kept. Hope I can explain this correctly so to make sense: In Windows7, whenever you make a change in your Sounds, this automatically creates a new Theme, unsaved but active. If you change the Themes, the sound change is not saved because the new Theme brings back its own sounds. If you change the new Theme to include new sounds, it creates yet another unsaved new theme. Only MS could complicate things as much. o_O

In other words, this is NOT InstantRecovery's fault.
