Threads, which is designed as a companion app to Instagram, invites users to automatically share their location, speed, and battery life with friends, along with more typical text, photo, and video messages using Instagram’s creative tools. The app, which is designed for sharing with your “close friends” list on Instagram, is now being tested internally at Facebook.

A messaging app built around your close friends might be more popular. That’s what Snapchat already is today for a healthy portion of its users.
For Facebook and Instagram, which have long coveted Snapchat’s strong engagement among younger users, Threads could represent another effort to chip away at their rival’s appeal.

Why it matters: Facebook CEO thinks the future of messaging is more personal. To that end, Instagram has unveiled Threads, a standalone camera-centric app that allows users to send private photos and videos to close friends.

Facebook-owned Instagram was rumored to be working on a standalone messaging app called Threads two months ago. Now, the company has formally unveiled Threads which seeks to be used primarily by you and your closest friends. It's meant to tie into the "Close Friends" feature that launched last year on Instagram itself.
Direct Messages are also apart of the Threads app. The primary difference is that only the people you've chosen as close friends will appear. You can also create group chats but only if everybody is in your close friends list.

Zuckerberg believes a shift to more private, encrypted communications will be the future of messaging. Threads is another step in that direction by encouraging sharing of private photos and videos only with close friends.
Threads is rolling out today on both iOS and Android.

Threads is clearly aimed at countering Snap's (NYSE:SNAP) Snapchat, Instagram's top competitor in the Gen Z market. That's why Snap's stock dipped when reports about Threads surfaced in late August, and why it fell again after Facebook officially launched the app.

However, recent data from Apptopia indicates that those fears were overblown. The research firm claims that only 220,000 people, or less than 0.1% of Instagram's users, downloaded Threads within the first week.
That performance was dismal compared to Instagram's IGTV and Boomerang apps, which hit 1.5 million and 2.8 million downloads, respectively, in the first week. This indicates that Threads will remain a minor secondary app for Instagram instead of a "Snapchat killer.
The bottom line
Facebook realizes that it's losing younger users to Snapchat, but it still hasn't figured out how to win them back. Instead, Facebook's tighter integration of Instagram into its core app will likely alienate Gen Z users, while odd stand-alone apps like Threads will fail to take off.

It's a bit of a bummer, because I'm not really into Snapchat. I do follow people on Instagram, and luckily they are planning to offer direct messaging via the desktop. But I'm wondering what's taking so long.

Last year, Instagram announced it was ending support for its standalone mobile messaging app known as Direct, which had allowed users to quickly create and share messages with friends. Shortly thereafter, the company launched Threads, a new messaging app focused on status updates and communication with only those you identified in Instagram as your “Close Friends.”
Now, these two messaging concepts are merging. With the latest update to Threads, Instagram is again offring the full inbox experience, it says.

The changes were noted in the latest app update and were soon spotted by social media consultant Matt Navarra and noted reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong — both who keep a close eye on changes to popular social apps.

With the changes to Threads, one has to wonder if Facebook is now envisioning the standalone chat app as another potential entry point into its larger messaging platform.
Instagram says that’s not the case today.

“Cross-app communication is an opt-in update for people using Instagram, and will not be enabled for Threads,” a spokesperson told TechCrunch.
That doesn’t mean Threads won’t be updated to later offer some of the other changes that Instagram users can now take advantage of, if they choose to upgrade their messaging experience.

Presumably, this would mean connecting the Threads app on the backend to the newly built messaging infrastructure. [...] And this, in turn, could make it harder to unspool the apps in the case that Facebook is forced to break up its business [...]

It’s not clear, however, if Threads has yet been connected to that infrastructure or if it will further down the road. But it’s worth keeping an eye on.

Instagram to shut down Threads as Meta consolidates its messaging platforms

Instagram’s standalone messaging service Threads will cease to exist by the end of 2021, Meta has confirmed to TechCrunch. The app will display a notice prompting users to return to Instagram starting November 23rd.

Threads was a similar idea to Facebook Messenger — it allowed users to send and receive Instagram DMs in a dedicated messaging interface outside of the main app. It had a collection of quirky features, including automatic statuses that the app could set for you based on what your phone was doing. All of those tools will be available in Instagram itself by the time Threads shuts down, the company said in a statement to TechCrunch.

Reached for comment, Instagram spokesperson Christine Pai provided the following statement to The Verge: “We know that people care about connecting with their close friends, and we’ve seen this particularly over the past few years with the growth of messaging on Instagram.” Pai added, “We’re now focusing our efforts on enhancing how you connect with close friends on Instagram, and depracating the Threads app.”
