Instagram Lite, the two-year-old version of the Instagram app aimed at emerging markets, has quietly disappeared. The previously highly ranked app vanished from the Google Play charts on April 13 in the countries where it was active, including Kenya, Mexico, Peru and the Philippines. Existing Instagram Lite users have been directed to the main Instagram app via a message that claimed “Instagram Lite is No Longer Supported.”

Android Police first reported the news of Instagram Lite’s shutdown. TechCrunch has since confirmed details of the app’s removal with Instagram parent, Facebook.

“We are rolling back the test of the Instagram Lite app, a Facebook spokesperson said. “You can start using the latest version of Instagram instead to connect with the people and things you love,” they noted.
On June 28, 2018, Mexico was the first market to receive Instagram Lite.
Due to demand for “Lite” applications in these regions, Instagram Lite was able to climb to the top of Google Play’s charts.

A number of major tech companies also offer apps aimed at emerging markets, often dubbed their “Lite” version, including Uber, Tinder, Spotify, Twitter and others. Google does the same under the “Go” brand.
But unlike many of these efforts, Instagram Lite had not yet reached some of the larger emerging markets these apps tend to target, like India, Indonesia, Brazil and others. That could change in the future, however.

Instagram Lite is back and barely changed after a 4-month hiatus (APK Download)

Facebook has quietly revived Instagram Lite, a boiled-down, visually-identical version of the social media app. The company pushed its first update to the publicly-listed APK in 11 months after having officially shuttered the service in May, purportedly for a revamp.

Overall, the experience seems to pick up where it was last left some 5 months ago. Not only is Lite smaller than the full Instagram app by a factor of 16 (just under 2MB against almost 33MB) and is relying on just-in-time load requests for assets — [...]
A spokesperson for Facebook confirmed that it is testing Lite again to provide people with a "high-quality experience" regardless of device or network quality, but gave no details otherwise.

Up until the May break, it regularly ranked within the top 20 downloaded social apps on the Play Store in Mexico, Peru, and the Philippines. Lite even made it to #8 in Kenya.

Instagram Lite app is being tested by Facebook in India, revealed Vishal Shah, VP of Product, Instagram, at the Facebook Fuel for India virtual event on Wednesday. The new app comes in less than 2MB of size. Facebook initially tested the Instagram Lite app in the country back in June 2018. That app, however, went offline in May this year and was silently reintroduced in September.

In addition to the testing of the new Instagram Lite app, the photo- and video-sharing platform brought the second version of its ‘Born on Instagram' programme that is aimed to help creators grow their social presence.

The new Instagram Lite, made specifically for Android devices, is designed to offer the core Instagram experience, sans some features including Reels, Shopping, and IGTV. It will be available in several Indian languages – Bangla, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil, and Telugu.

“Today, we're announcing the test of IG Lite in India,” said Shah during his keynote at the Facebook Fuel for India event. “It was built to provide access to high-quality Instagram experience to our users in India, irrespective of the device, platform, and the network that they are on.”
