Instagram confirmed it’s preparing to soon launch its TikTok competitor, known as Reels, in the U.S. The company expects to bring the new video feature — which is designed specifically for short-form, creative content — to its platform in early August, according to a spokesperson.

NBC News reported this morning Instagram would arrive in the U.S. and more than 50 other countries in a matter of weeks, citing sources familiar with the matter.
A Facebook spokesperson confirmed the U.S. (and international) launch, saying “We’re excited to bring Reels to more countries, including the U.S., in early August,” without providing specific details of which further markets will be added.

“The community in our test countries has shown so much creativity in short-form video, and we’ve heard from creators and people around the world that they’re eager to get started as well,” the spokesperson added.

This isn’t the first time the companies have gone head to head: TikTok previously ran ads on Facebook and Instagram and, in an apparent response to Facebook’s outreach, launched on Thursday a $200 million fund to distribute money to creators and presumably retain users and attract new ones as it faces mounting security and privacy concerns and the Reels launch.

Engadget: To beat TikTok, Facebook is allegedly throwing money at creators

The era of the social media superstar leaping between platforms is upon us.
According to the WSJ report, Facebook/Instagram wants either exclusivity, or for Reels to be the first place new social clips are posted. It has also apparently offered to bankroll the production of these clips, which could be a substantial sum if it’s recruiting lots of creators. But, then again, if that sort of cash is less than the customer acquisition cost Facebook would have to pay otherwise, it may all be worth it.

Instagram Reels, the company’s significant effort in challenging TikTok on short-form creative content, is launching globally, starting today. The feature is being made available across 50 countries, including the U.S., as TechCrunch had previously reported. The expansion means Reels will now be available in key international markets, such as India, Brazil, France, Germany, the U.K., Japan, Australia, Spain, Mexico, Argentina and several others.

In late 2018, Facebook launched a TikTok clone called Lasso. The app didn’t take off and was shuttered this year.
Following Lasso’s tests, Instagram released Reels in Brazil in November 2019, where it was called Cenas, to see how Instagram users would respond to a different sort of mobile video experience.

With Reels, Instagram’s goal is not just to capture the now potentially up-for-grabs TikTok audience in the U.S. — it’s to steal them away even if TikTok remains.

Meanwhile, Instagram’s browsing experience hasn’t offered a way to quickly swipe through videos like on TikTok.
Reels aims to change that. The feature lets users create and publish 15-second videos using a new set of editing tools that include options like AR effects, a countdown timer, a new align tool to line up different takes and, of course, music.

Overall, what Instagram has built isn’t all that differentiated from TikTok. But nor is it a direct clone.

Earlier this week, Facebook finally released its latest attempt at a TikTok rival. It’s called Instagram Reels, and as its name suggests, it’s actually a feature that lives inside Instagram, without an app of its own. While incorporating Reels directly inside an already popular app gives it a good chance at succeeding, it also adds clutter and bloat to the Instagram experience, and after trying it out, risks confusing users.

It doesn’t hurt that Instagram has done a good job in seeding early access to influencers who are also big on TikTok; most of the early Reels’ content has the same kind of dances and amusing lip sync memes, if not direct copies of the videos that were already previously posted on the rival video app.

Creating Reels will instantly be familiar to anyone who has used TikTok.

But there are a few important differences between the two. For one thing, Reels are limited to 15 seconds, while TikTok videos can be as long as 60 seconds when you string four 15-second videos together.
Another neat feature is that you don’t actually need to be a TikTok user to watch TikTok videos; you can just launch the app and view them without signing up. You can’t do that with Reels; you need to have an Instagram account to view the videos.

No surprise that it's not impressive, Zuckerberg really isn't that good in designing stuff. Can't believe he's worth 100 billion dollar. I absolutley hate the Instagram Stories bar, I don't watch that many videos anymore, because of the stupid design.

It’s easy to forget about Instagram Reels.

Instagram’s TikTok competitor rolled out last week, bringing with it a newly revamped Explore tab that attempts to replicate TikTok’s video feed. Alongside a new camera layout designed to make creating easier (spoiler alert: it only made things more complicated), Instagram’s goal was obvious: make Reels a new go-to experience on the app, much like it made Stories blow up in 2016.
But a week after its launch, Reels feels tacked on.

The authentic reels mostly seem to come from featured Instagram creators, and they’re often based on popular TikTok trends.

Unlike Reels, which Instagram makes people seek out to enjoy, TikTok just surfaces content. Eugene Wei, a former product officer at Amazon and Hulu, observed that Instagram is now “a Frankenstein of feeds and formats and functions spread across a somewhat confused constellation of apps.”
Instagram baked Stories into the app’s core experience — it’s built directly into the main feed and camera screen — but Reels feels like an afterthought.

Two months after launching the short video format Reels in India through a 'broad test' after the TikTok ban, Facebook's photo sharing app Instagram has launched a separate tab for Reels only for Indian users, the company said on Thursday.

Manish Chopra, director and head of partnerships at Facebook India told ET India is the first market where the company is launching the Reels tab due to the 'interest' and 'creativity' it has seen here and is planning to integrate more tools in future. Reels was launched in India in July and India was the fourth country where Reels was available, after Brazil, Germany and France. In August, Instagram launched Reels in over 50 countries, including the US.

"We are currently focused on making Reels a great experience for people, but we are planning to integrate more tools in the future. We’re engaging with public figures and creators to use their creativity and use Reels while expressing themselves around moments and festivals, like independence day, rakhi, ganesh utsav and onam," said Chopra.

Instagram Reels is doubling the length of videos in a new update, allowing users to make 30-second videos instead of 15 seconds.

Reels’ biggest competitor, TikTok, lets people record videos up to a minute in length. Instagram is also extending the timer from three to 10 seconds, and people will also be able to trim and delete any clip in an attempt to make the editing process smoother.
Although Instagram hasn’t said much about how many people are using Reels, it’s an area where the company seems pretty invested.
