There is a program called "HistoryKill" which is being marketed with pop-ups several places on the web. It is described on their website as, "The #1 Rated Privacy and Security Tool For The Internet." It has a 15-day trial at http://www.historykill.com/

Make no mistake this is snake oil.

I am always upset by this kind of crap because it is worse than having nothing at all. You think you are protected from snoops when you are not!!

Get this, they claim in the program that you can set it to 21 "wipes" that they claim are first "encrypted" before wiping. Well, to run the program takes all of two seconds. If you want to see real true-blue snake oil in action, get the trial, run the "sesure shredding tool" (encrypted of course) and then run a good, solid file recovery program, like "File Recovery" from LC-Tech. You can download an unlimited use version at
    http://www.lc-tech.com/product_overview_demos.asp
It's not free, it will only recover files in the trial that are 10k or smaller. But it is unlimited in its showing you what it has recovered[/]. You can use it forever as a good utility to test just how good your file erasing program is or whatever.

I ran HistoryKill at 21 wipes (encrypted - ha!) and ran File Recovery where it went about pulling up every single file. Nothing was zeroed out - in fact they ALL were considered "GOOD" prospects for a full recovery.

I hate this kind of thing. And they want $40 bucks for the *&^%!

    Thanks, John!

It might take a little longer, but both Eraser ( http://www.tolvanen.com/eraser/ )  and NecroFile ( http://www.necrocosm.com/nfinfo.htm ) actually work -  and they're both free! Pete

    Hi Pete!

I love Eraser. I have set up an on-demand file with Eraser that does the full Gutmann treatment on all of the basic IE stuff to wipe, etc.

Actually, I personally accept the motto:

I love my country, but fear my government.

Isn't that sad? But it's true.
