Why can't I create an image of a disk written to the same
disk from the boot CD? Is this because the operating system
    is not up and running?

Is it possible create the image and write it to the same disk?

If not, how can I create an image file of approx. size 3.76GB and
write it to a 4.7GB DVD using the boot CD?

    Hello Harrier,

Thank you for choosing Acronis Disk Backup Software.

Please accept my apologies for the delay with the response.

Please download and install the latest build (2323) of Acronis True Image 9.0 which is available at: http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/support/updates/

To get access to updates you should create an account at:
    http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/my/
then log in and use your serial number to register your software.

If the problem still persists with the latest build (2323) of Acronis True Image 9.0 then please collect the following information:

    - Create Acronis Report as it is described in Acronis Help Post;

    - What exactly do you mean when saying that you can not "create an image of a disk written to the same disk from the boot CD"? What prevents you from doing this?

    - Have you received any error messages? What exact error messages? When exactly you received them?

    - Describe actions taken before the problem appears step-by-step.

Please submit a request for technical support. Attach the collected report.txt file and information to your request along with the link to this thread. We will investigate the problem and try to provide you with the solution.

Please be aware that the current version of Acronis True Image doesn’t write to DVD directly, instead it utilizes third party UDF packet DVD writing software. You can find more information on how to write your images to DVD at this FAQ article.

Since there is no operating system or any other applications running when your PC is booted from Acronis True Image 9.0 Bootable Rescue CD, there is no way to burn images to DVD.

The ability to write images to DVD directly will be implemented in the future builds\versions of a particular software, but exact time frame is not decided yet.

    Thank you.

I think the comment below explains all:

... and there is no way to write the image onto the drive which you are
    imaging.

When creating an image, I usually run Acronis 8.0 (889) from Windows 2000
and write the created image to a temporary directory on the HD. I then
burn this image onto a DVD using UDF, not packet writing.

I look forward to the time when I can use the CD to either write the image
to the HD I am imaging or directlyto DVD.

I recently had a problem with Acronis after installing several Windows
updates. Trying to create an image subsequently resulted in strange
behavior; basically messages indicating that the image would take 2 hrs
then 6 hrs, 16 hrs, 1 day etc. to complete. I removed Acronis and
reinstalled. It then worked correctly again.

The ability to create images and write them to a HD or a DVD directly
from the boot CD would be of great benefit in this and, I suppose, many
    other circumstances.
