It is installed, but the 30 day trial is ended, and as I thought, the warning is still showing.

Looks like ESET is holding me hostage, so to speak. I think I will try uninstalling ESET Smart Security, later today.

Then I will try IFW, again. Hopefully, that warning message will not show.

ESET is gone, but when I tried IFW, I still got that warning.

And, I have gotten access to Controlled Folders whereas earlier it was greyed out. I will disable, and try IFW, and see if that warning goes.

But, maybe I should add IFW to Controlled Folders, though.

"Yes, you can exclude specific programs from being restricted by Controlled Folders in Microsoft Defender. This is done by adding them to the allowed applications list within the Controlled Folder Access settings."

I save my images in TeraByte's protected folder. A root folder (any partition)...

    \TeraByte_TBI_Backups

    ProtectIt needs to be enabled.

Edit... files in this folder can only be deleted by TeraByte apps.

    "ProtectIt"?

    Do you mean this?

"Controlled Folder Access in Windows Defender is on by default and should generally be kept on to protect your files from ransomware and other malicious apps."

Because it is off, now. Just to get rid of that warning message. when I open IFW.

So, all this time I have been running IFW, I have had my ransomware protection, disabled.

Controlled Folder Access in Windows Defender is different from TeraByte ProtectIt.

I have Controlled Folder Access in Windows Defender OFF and don't get the message you saw. Even with ProtectIt disabled.

If you had used Controlled Folder Access in Windows Defender, it would not have protected your USB HD unless you had set it up to do so. By default, Controlled Folder Access in Windows Defender only protects System Folders.

I can't remember details but I didn't like Controlled Folder Access in Windows Defender.

Controlled Folder Access is off by default. Where did you find the default is on?

I am really confused, and all because of that warning that I saw fot the first time when I opened IFW.

I suspect it was somehow related to ESET. And probably false.

Check ProtectIt in the IFW manual.

I remember when you helped me a 2/3 years ago, privately, with setting up IFW on this laptop.

I posted some of the journey, publicly in Wilders' forum, here - https://www.wilderssecurity.com/forums/test-forum.7/

    You never mentioned "ProtectIt".

Oops. I've been using it for a long time.

Edit. This is from January 2018.

C:\Program Files (x86)\TeraByte Drive Image Backup and Restore Suite\x64

C:\Program Files (x86)\TeraByte Drive Image Backup and Restore Suite\x86

    Do you have protectit.sys?

Ah, well I never knew. Not to worry.

I will just add IFW to the Allowed Apps list in Controlled Folders.

We just cross-posted at the same time.

Not to worry I added it to Control Folders. IFW is good, to go.

This is unrelated to Controlled folders.

Thanks. Can you confirm it is running by pasting this into an Admin Command Prompt...

    Code:
    sc query protectit
