    moontan,

Interesting times. I think IFL is a bit slower in my computer too but others find IFL is the fastest.

I only see IFD version 2.62a listed on Terabyte's website. Is IFD version 2.62b in beta testing?

    Thanks in Advance.

As a paid customer of the program, you have to input your information and then it takes you to the download page. On that page both the versions 2.62a and 2.62b (GUI) of IFD are listed.

Interesting backup and restores times...IFL screams on my machine for both backup and restore compared to IFD and IFW. I don't have actual metrics but it's noticeably faster. Machine type must also come into play here.

    napoleon1815,

Yes, an IFW restore is about 30% faster in my computer than an IFL restore. In my son's computer, IFL is 30% faster than IFW.

Has anyone done Imaging and Restores with the mouse click GUI version of IFD? Any issues? Rock solid reliability?

    Thanks in Advance.

    TheKid7,

Much the same as the old IFD but probably easier for a new IFD user because of the mouse. I still use the old one in my auto image/restores but I may change over. Lately I've developed an interest in automated IFW restores so IFD isn't being used much.

I've done a few backup and restores with the new GUI-based IFD...rock solid and had zero issues. These were full images just restored back on the same drive. Highly recommended!

The latest versions have a Compact option for the occasional time when you want to restore your image into the smallest partition possible.

For example, let's say you had a 100 GB OS partition which contained 10 GB of data. Assume that the data is spread over the first 50 GB of the partition. This is possible as Perfect Disk (for example) puts the page file in the middle of the partition. The Compact option moves all the files to the first 10 GB of this partition and then creates the image. The image can be restored into a 10 GB partition.

no problems here; i uncheck the boxes and the shortcuts are not created.

must be a problem with your machine/setup.

    zfactor,

I don't see that. For the first install on a computer I remove the tick from items I don't want and on subsequent program updates IFW doesn't have those boxes ticked. I know you are referring to the first install on a computer but I don't get icons I haven't requested.

maybe you misunderstand. i only get icons for the programs i install. but i only want a ifw icon on my desktop not the tbview stuff or pdf. and even on updates i get icons on the desktop for the options ticked.. and i do uncheck the not to install desktop icons during install also

I just tried a fresh install. I ticked desktop icons for IFW and got 2 icons. The second was the .pdf manual. I didn't tick desktop icons for TBIView and none appeared.

Same here when I did a fresh install (which is what I usually do when they release a new version).

In Post #37 I mentioned smaller partitions. Earlier versions of IFW, IFD, IFL did standard sector restores. So in my example above, they could restore to a partition no smaller than the last sector in use. Which would have been at the 50 GB mark. The 100 GB partition could be restored to a 50 GB partition.

If your original partition was....( * is sectors in use, - is free space)

    [---**----**--]

then the target partition to restore into can not be smaller than...

    [---**----**]

But the latest IFW etc perform an extra step (if selected). They move all data to the left so you finish with sectors that look like this.

    [****---------]

In the example above, the last sector in use is now at the 10 GB mark.

Correct, but many other programs (like Acronis) do file restores so you can size the partition to whatever you want during the restore process, provided you don't go smaller than the space needed.

It is a step in the right direction but I have not tested that feature though. Does it add more time to the backup?
