The title says it all. For older computer and laptops with only one HDD available and no external nor CD drive what tools does one use to image the OS to a second partition AND restore the image from that same partition?

So far I have been using Macrium free version for this but always put the image on a second HDD. Does not seem to work with just one HDD.

Is it possible at all to image and restore on the same HDD from different partitions?

What free tools do you use for this? Is there an open-source tool for this perhaps?(Please take into mind that for this scenario there is just one HDD available)

    frank7,

Every image/restore app should be able to do this with a single HD. Which OS are you using? What errors are you getting? Can you tell us about the partitions on your HD?

I use Image for Windows (TeraByte Unlimited), Image for Linux (TeraByte Unlimited), Image for Dos (TeraByte Unlimited) and Drive Cloner Rx (Horizon DataSys) for making sector-by-sector backups. Unfortunately, they aren't free and open source.

You should take a look at Clonezilla. That's a free and open source imaging program.
