I tend to go with the total bells and whistles package. Then trim and tweak to suite. :D

If I do decide to go to Windows 7 it would be the Home Premium edition.
Most likely I'd buy a new set up; hard drive, monitor, the works.

Thats why I prefer Ultimate because of the multiple language feature. The extra cost is worth it to me to get this functionality.

OK, i REALLY wanted to buy upgrade to Home Premium, BUT, i just found out that my beloved university decided to cover my faculty with convention with MS and i get Windows 7 Professional (accademic license) for FREE. :D I opted for the 64bit version.

Downloading as we speak (although i won't install it immediately).

I won't be upgrading because my computer won't run it but it I were it would be just the Home Premium version. Nothing in the Professional or Ultimate versions that I would really need.

Best thing you can do is find a nice MS employee and buy it off him/her for 25 bucks, any which version :)

Just installed W7 Ultimate and Office 2007 Enterprice, bought together for €26 only. (Teacher/Student price here in Holland).

Accepted wisdom seems to be that clean install is the way to go - is that what you're doing?

Yes , I just did a clean install even though I was running Vista .
Everything took exactly 23 minutes - installation , setting up username , etc . Didn't require a single driver . Very nice - just like the RC version

  17. Windows 7 Professional. (Remember XP Pro)

That was the only version they had available throught MSDN AA. :D
They actually had both x86 and x64 flavours.

I'm in no rush, but when I make the move it will be to HP as I don't need the extra baggage of Pro/Ult for the family's PCs! However, at work we will most likely go with Ult.

I have often wondered when I buy my netbook for the purposes listed in your link is 7 Starter good enough? Why pay more and why slow it up. Will it handle Office 2010 for the occassional letter or simple spreadsheet? I thought the netbook would make a nice light traveling companion when I am away from home.

Ultimate, as it has AppLocker, and other versions dont.
Pro is also allright as it has Software Restriction Policies; the lower versions dont.
