The Oculus Quest from Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) was billed as the most important headset for the virtual reality (VR) industry in 2019, and in many ways it has lived up to expectations. The headset has made VR more mobile and accessible (both in price and ease of use), and it's apparently selling better than Facebook had planned.
If you try to order an Oculus Quest headset today, you can expect a nearly two-month wait. Has VR finally reached the mass market?

There are multiple challenges VR companies have in reaching scale. One is price and the other is the fact that only a small percentage of people have tried high-end VR because it hasn't been very accessible to consumers. The Oculus Quest is trying to address both of those obstacles with a $400 price point that can get the device into more people's hands.

It's no coincidence that Quest sold out over the holidays. It's the perfect price point as a gift, and many consumers will identify it with the gamers in their lives. But hot holiday sales don't mean the headset is on a great long-term trajectory.

Shannon Ball, the supportive services co-ordinator at Carefor Hospice, said staff launched a fundraising campaign to cover the $5,300 cost of the VR technology.

A growing number of hospices are purchasing virtual reality headsets as a complementary therapy for palliative patients. Since Carefor started using their two headsets in early December, 15 people — both hospice residents and those in the community — have tried them.

"It gives them hope and reduces boredom and depression. And studies show it can actually reduce physical pain."
Ball said staff also want to start using VR technology that comes with a camera to shoot a family event, like a wedding for a resident who can't attend.
"It's better than photographs because the person will feel like they're actually at the wedding," said Bell.

Google will stop selling its Daydream View headsets. The BBC has halted investment in its virtual reality team. And Samsung won’t be supporting its Gear VR on future smartphones, earning a heartfelt eulogy from rival VR firm Oculus. It’s not looking good for phone-based virtual reality. Is this the end? And, if so, what’s next?
Is peak VR in the past?
George Jijiashvili, senior analyst at Ovum, notes that smartphone VR headset sales actually peaked in 2017, when Samsung announced it had shipped five million Gear headsets – although he believes that many were given away for free.
“This industry got caught up by the VR hype to some degree, but now everyone has had a reality check.”
What’s next for VR?
Set aside the eulogies and shuttered projects, and there is still life in VR. “Despite the doom and gloom stories about VR, spurred on by these recent developments, I remain very optimistic about VR’s future,” said Jijiashvili.

“Abandoning phone-based headsets like Gear VR and Daydream is just part of VR’s journey.”
Indeed, smartphone VR helped millions of people give the technology a try to better understand its possibilities, he argues, and let tech companies test hardware and content, helping to inform the next generation of devices.

Sony hasn’t had much to say about their virtual reality platform lately, but the company’s PlayStation VR headset, which was released more than 3 years ago, has still been racking up sales. At the company’s CES press conference this evening, they announced that they have now sold 5 million PS VR units.
In regards to this latest metric, there isn’t much to compare it to out there as most VR companies aren’t keen to share just how slow the industry has moved over the past 5 years, but Sony seems to feel pretty good about how their first release has fared.

The PlayStation VR hasn’t received a major update since its release, and it doesn’t seem that Sony plans to ship an update to coincide with the PlayStation 5’s launch — though the current generation headset will be compatible with the new system, the company has detailed.

Valve can’t make enough of its Index, with the VR headset completely selling out ahead of the release of Half-Life: Alyx in March, despite how expensive the hardware is – but more units are promised to be arriving.

The hype for Alyx meant that the Valve Index sold out almost immediately in the US and Canada, as you may recall, but the trouble now is that the hardware is out of stock pretty much everywhere across the globe.
And when we say hardware, we mean not just the full package, but also the standalone headset, or standalone controllers – everything – [...]
Furthermore, on the subject of the depleted inventory, a Valve spokesperson told the website: “We are working hard to build more units and meet the high demand. We are targeting to be back in stock before Half-Life: Alyx ships.”

As Road to VR reports, on the Index’s Steam product page, Valve has implemented a ‘notify me’ button so folks can sign up to receive a notification when units are back in stock in their particular region.

French VR company VRrOOm is launching a six degrees of freedom (6-DoF) social VR platform that operates within the VRChat live platform, and enables multiple users to take part in live events, and includes the possibility of real-time photo-realistic representation.

VRrOOm now works with more than 20 film festivals and markets, including Cannes XR, Strasbourg, Paris 360, Annecy, Sitges, Qingdao, and Stereopsia.

“For me virtual reality is a dream come true,” says Cacciuttolo. “It brings the emotion and intensity of films, live events and the performing arts to the audience wherever they are located.”
Cacciuttolo is now taking this vision one step further with a new VR platform that offers six degrees of freedom (6-DoF) – giving users the freedom to explore locations and perform real life tasks in VR.

In a nutshell: Lenovo has filed a new headset with the FCC. Despite an embarrassing history in VR, Lenovo will be returning to try again in a more mature market. The FCC listing calls the new headset the Lenovo VR 3030S and describes it as standalone, meaning it won’t need to plug into a PC to function. Beyond that, we don’t know anything, but Lenovo’s history in the headset market gives us a few amusing hints.

You might have never seen a Lenovo VR headset, but there have been plenty of them. Two years ago, they released the Mirage Solo (above): the first Google Daydream headset that ended up being the only Google Daydream headset.
Lenovo has tried Google’s platform, Microsoft’s platform, and Oculus’ platform. Some attempts have been reasonably successful, but none of them have turned Lenovo into a big name in the VR space. Something tells me that for the 3030S, Lenovo might be looking at Valve's SteamVR.

Maybe this will be the year virtual reality goes mainstream. If we say it enough times we’ll be right eventually, yeah?

But it really does feel like 2020 might be the year. Four years into consumer virtual reality, I finally feel excited again. The hardware is great, and cheaper than ever before. The games are promising, albeit few. And there’s a sense that maybe the “We need software to sell hardware to make developing software worthwhile” vicious cycle has finally been overcome. Maybe.

If nothing else, I’m confident VR isn’t disappearing anytime soon, even if “Slow but constant growth” isn’t nearly as compelling a story as “One day, everything changed.”

In 2016, Jang Ji-sung’s seven-year-old daughter Nayeon died of an incurable disease. Three years later, the South Korean mother was reunited with Nayeon — sort of — in a virtual world created for a televised documentary.

In the former setting, Jang stands in front of a massive green screen while wearing both a VR headset and what appear to be some sort of haptic gloves. In the latter, she and her daughter talk, hold hands, and even have a birthday party complete with a lit cake.
According to Aju Business Daily, the production team spent eight months on the project. They designed the virtual park after one the mother and daughter had visited in the real world, and used motion capture technology to record the movements of a child actor that they could later use as a model for their virtual Nayeon.

How well are virtual reality headsets selling? With most of the sector's major players remaining coy on sales figures, we're left to draw an incomplete picture from various bits of data. This month, at least, we have an intriguing new data point: a burst in PC-VR hardware use, two months in a row.

Valve's gaming marketplace Steam includes an opt-in hardware survey feature, and the results are published as percentages of surveyed users on a monthly basis.
What surprised us was the continued growth of that metric through the following month—and a statistically significant one, at that. The latest survey, taken during January 2020, says that 1.31 percent of all surveyed Steam users own a VR system, up from 1.09 percent the month prior.

Let's not forget, there is likely a significant number of Oculus system owners who never connect to Steam, thanks to its Oculus Home landing zone (which loads an all-in-one storefront whenever users put a Rift, Rift S, or Quest headset over their eyes).

Oxford VR (OVR), a U.K.-based virtual reality (VR) startup that emerged from Oxford University’s Department of Psychiatry back in 2017, has officially launched a VR-based therapy to help people overcome social anxiety.

While VR is still struggling to gain adoption outside of gaming, health care is one area where it has been making real inroads. OVR builds immersive technology that aims to improve people’s mental health, and last month the company raised $13 million to push its offering into health care systems around the world.

“Our vision is to turn the tide on life-interrupting mental illnesses, pushing the boundaries of clinical excellence and new technology to transform lives,” said June Dent, director of clinical partnerships at OVR.
OVR social engagement is delivered to patients through weekly half-hour sessions.

Perhaps the most important aspect of this approach is that the social engagement therapy is entirely automated, meaning it doesn’t require the presence of a qualified clinician — the session can be delivered by a staff member who has been trained to set up the VR headset.

The Oculus Quest untethered virtual reality headset is available on Oculus’ website. The ship date at the time of publishing is March 16th. This model, along with many other VR headsets, has been out of stock for the past few months — in part due to the impact of the novel coronavirus pandemic on manufacturing.
It’s unclear if this is a sign that availability is returning to normal or if this is a limited supply. Valve recently sold through a limited amount of its Index virtual reality headset on Monday.

So far, the stock only seems to be available through Oculus, but both the 64GB ($399) and 128GB ($499) models are available. Best Buy, Amazon, and other retailers that normally sell the Quest don’t appear to have received units just yet.

As part of their Game Developers Showcase, Facebook revealed details of a future update to the Oculus Quest that will bring a redesigned user interface (UI). The new UI will allow easier access to settings and browser windows while in VR apps, without having to return to Oculus Home (in apps which support this)

In a blog post detailing the changes, Oculus stated that the the update features “a completely redesigned universal menu, new immersive overlays, and multi-window support for 2D apps starting with Oculus Browser.”
The Quest will also soon support multi-window browsing for 2D apps. “Watch a video to crib gameplay tips in one window, check out your friends’ latest Facebook updates in another, and catch up on the day’s news in a third,” explained Facebook in their blog post.

“You can open, close, and rearrange windows from a new control box above the window. Support for multiple windows will first come to Oculus Browser, with support for more 2D apps like Chats and Store coming later.”
These updates will all begin “rolling out this month” according to Facebook . This likely means that some users will receive the features before others, in a gradual roll-out process similar to previous updates.

The teaser does not give much away but does confirm that it is a Windows Mixed Reality headset powered by Microsoft.

Calling it the new standard in VR, HP says they developed the HP Virtual Reality HMD in collaboration with Valve and Microsoft, to deliver an immersive, comfortable and compatible VR experience.
Last year’s HP Reverb cost between $599 and $649 for the Pro version. HP has not made a full announcement yet with full specs, price and availability details.

Smartphone-based VR created a lot of problems. The time it takes to slot in and out the phone, and the fact the user’s phone is unusable while docked into the headset, makes people less likely to want to use VR on a regular basis.
A Gear VR session could also end after a matter of minutes, depending on the device and conditions in which it is used, due to the phone’s processor reaching its thermal limits.

Today, a Carnegie Mellon University team announced a new option: a wearable multi-string haptic system that enables users to sense large obstacles, providing a sense of resistance when reaching out to touch objects.

The prototype implementation of “Wireality” relies on a shoulder-mounted lock-and-release device to manage a collection of seven strings attached to the wearer’s fingertips, knuckles, and wrist.
Today, touch is simulated using small vibrating haptics that can signal modest impacts and interactions, but the CMU solution operates on a grander scale. Users could virtually tour a museum, feeling the walls, using handrails on escalators, and touching sculptures.

In an unsurprising turn of events, Valve has announced that it is ending SteamVR support for macOS. Spotted by Apple Insider, the company made a terse announcement on its website, stating that

"SteamVR has ended [macOS] support so our team can focus on Windows and Linux."
Legacy builds will remain available, though, so tinkerers can still code VR experiences that run on Apple hardware.
Valve didn’t provide explicit reasons for cancelling support, but gaming hasn’t been the Mac’s strong suit for decades, so lack of interest on the part of developers and users could have been a contributor.

There were several signs that the end was nigh. Valve’s own VR headset, the Index, does not support macOS, and Apple even removed photos featuring VR gadgets from its website, as just a few examples.

According to a new report from Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman says a new version of the popular, £399 standalone virtual reality device is facing delays due to the Covid-19 crisis. The firm had initially planned to launch the next-gen Quest before the end of 2020, but supply chain complications means the release is likely to slip into 2021.

It’s likely we would have seen this device launched at the Oculus Connect conference, but that’s been cancelled, with Facebook putting a stop to all in-person gatherings until Summer 2021 at the earliest.
The timing is probably good for Facebook to launch more Oculus hardware, given how much time people are spending at home. There’s plenty of potential for VR to excel in the enterprise world as an alternative to video conferencing.

Indiana's case workers use VR to make sure they'll like the job first

With an annual turnover rate of 50 percent, being a case worker for the Indiana Department of Child Services isn’t for everyone. But Kevin Jones, the department’s chief information officer, said that the introduction of a virtual-reality simulation to show applicants what the job is like before they sign on has reduced that turnover figure by 18 percent.

The department began collecting data from outgoing case workers and found that more than half of the case workers who left voluntarily said the experience of doing the job was completely different than what they’d imagined before starting.

“So I decided that we wanted to give them the experience of the job prior to being hired,” Jones said. “So what we decided to do was to implement virtual reality that gives them a fully simulated real live actor, engage with it from end to end.”
In addition to lending applicants insight, Jones said the program also enables the department to adjust its case-worker training sessions to address routine mistakes that crop up.
