Something like this? https://vr.google.com/cardboard/ It's basically an old-school stereogram viewer, like https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipe...rtatile_Museo_scienza_e_tecnologia_Milano.jpg There are two versions of the image, with offset angle of view, so they simulate a 3D view when merged. The device forces the left eye to see the left image, and the right eye to see the right image. You can see the effect without a device by letting your eyes cross. And you can see the same effect in wallpaper that has repeating patterns. Deviously repeating wallpaper actually has non-exact repeats that create 3D-like images. Here's an old stereogram: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stere...on_Common,_by_Soule,_John_P.,_1827-1904_3.jpg If you displayed that on a phone, you'd see 3D in your device.

I don't understand why they don't focus on AR, at least initially. I mean, look at all those people walking around, looking at their phones! So why not have a virtual phone interface, in (say) the upper left corner of the visual field. Which you could maximize if desired. But it'd be "transparent", so you wouldn't walk into traffic But no, Google went for the gargoyle thing, and freaked too many people.
