    Something like this?

    https://vr.google.com/cardboard/

It's basically an old-school stereogram viewer, like https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipe...rtatile_Museo_scienza_e_tecnologia_Milano.jpg

There are two versions of the image, with offset angle of view, so they simulate a 3D view when merged. The device forces the left eye to see the left image, and the right eye to see the right image. You can see the effect without a device by letting your eyes cross. And you can see the same effect in wallpaper that has repeating patterns. Deviously repeating wallpaper actually has non-exact repeats that create 3D-like images.

    Here's an old stereogram: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stere...on_Common,_by_Soule,_John_P.,_1827-1904_3.jpg

If you displayed that on a phone, you'd see 3D in your device.

I don't understand why they don't focus on AR, at least initially.

I mean, look at all those people walking around, looking at their phones! So why not have a virtual phone interface, in (say) the upper left corner of the visual field. Which you could maximize if desired. But it'd be "transparent", so you wouldn't walk into traffic ;) But no, Google went for the gargoyle thing, and freaked too many people.
