Bookmarks not working sometimes in IE favorites

    Hi , everybody:

I am using IE7 with all the patches from MS auto-updated. There is a problem been bugging me for a while. That is some hyperlinks(websites) in my favorites stop working for no reason, I click on it and nothing happens. The site has not changed its address and my system is clean. at first, I thought its some weird cache so I used CCcleaner to clean everything it can. But the problem is still there. I still have to type the address again then add it to favorites to replace the old-infunctional-link. And the new link will work for a while then stop working.

I have searched on google and found out its a quite common problem but I have not found a good solution to it. So I really could use some help here. thank you in advance

just checked with IE without add-ons, some favorites are still broken.

A couple of things you could try.

This is an older tip and may not apply.

I ran into something similar a while back, before I'd replaced IE-6 with -7 (I use Firefox as default, by the way, so no problems most of the time).

When I looked at Properties of the Favorites, each one pointed to its own entry in the favorites folder, rather than to a URL. So I wasn't going "out there" as intended.

Never did find a solution -- TweakUI has repairs for many special folders, but Favorites isn't one of them. Installing IE-7 did clear up the problem, suggesting that the Favorites folder had become corrupted and was replaced with a clean version in the new installation.

No ideas about suggestions if you've already got IE-7, sorry.

(Edit) As a P.S. - When I tried exporting Firefox bookmarks and did not import them into IE but instead used IE to open that HTML file, the resulting links worked just fine.

IE FAQ doesn't help and I have searched the older tip. I have same problem those guys had in taznetworks.com. His tip is good but the problem comes back after some clicks. :doubt: :doubt: :doubt:

would you guys say this weird thing has something to do with CCleaner ?

BTW, most of those unstable links are forum links which means I keep cookies on these forums. I put these forum site in to CCleaner's keep cookie option.

Yes, I looked its folder , those "not working links" are corrupted files. I dont know what caused it.

    Thank you for the reply:

I have reinstalled IE7 acouple times for this problem . In fact, this is a newly installed system just made yesterday and installed IE7 by using a standalone install pack downloaded from Microsoft.com.

Not all of my url.shortcuts not working. only corrupted files not working and almost all of those files are websites that store your password . for instance, forums and mail service providers.

I would try deleting the old shortcuts that aren't working and see if they can be rebuilt in IE7.

I would stay out of the registry for now and see how it goes.

Possibly worth mentioning is a snapfiles comment made by Terry P. (Oct 27, 2006) in reference to CCleaner.
Whether it carries over to the latest release I couldn't say.

    http://www.snapfiles.com/opinions/ie7/ie7.html

Further investigation would tell you he's not the only one with such a claim.

I have been doing some tests myself. It seems that most likely CClean 1.39 caused problem. I have been using CClean for quite a while , never had problem until 1.39 version. Now I have uninstalled CClean. I will give it a few days so see if this weird issue still exists.

update: some ppl on ccleaner forum saying 1.39.502 is loaded with bugs.
