For the first time, Hulu will allow users to download episodes for offline viewing. The feature is available today for iOS users who have subscribed to Hulu's ad-free on-demand tier.

Users will be able to download as many as 25 videos on up to five unique devices. Unwatched downloads will remain available offline for 30 days. If users begin watching a video, it will only remain available for two days. But in either case, users will be able to renew the license by going online again, provided the episode or film has not left Hulu since they first downloaded it.

However, Hulu's blog post announcing this new feature indicates that—as is also the case with Netflix and Amazon—not all content will be available to download.
iOS users need only update their apps in the App Store to start downloading videos today. Unfortunately, Android users will have to wait a while longer. "Downloads will be coming to Android users soon," Hulu wrote.

Hulu this summer finally brought back 4K content to its service, after abruptly removing it in 2018 while it focused on other priorities. Initially, its 4K content was only available on Apple TV 4K and Chromecast Ultra. Today, Hulu says it’s available on Xbox One devices, with support for Amazon Fire TV and LG WebOS in the works. More devices will also be supported soon, the company notes.

Today, Hulu’s 4K lineup is again focused largely on its original programming [...]. The company’s FAQ says most of its originals are available in 4K Ultra HD, and stream at 16 Mbps.

Earlier this month, Hulu announced that it was adding a Downloads features for some content that’ll enable users to save shows directly to their mobile devices. At the time of the announcement, the downloading functionality was limited to the company’s iOS app, but that changes starting today. Hulu’s Downloads feature is now rolling out on Android devices, as well.

As mentioned, you must be signed up for Hulu’s more expensive ‘No Ads’ plan, which offers the same on-demand streaming content without the ample commercial breaks. This version of the service is priced at $11.99/month, which is double the cheaper $5.99/month basic (with ads) plan.

There are a couple of restrictions to Hulu’s offline downloads feature that you need to be aware of. You’re limited to downloading 25 titles across five different devices at a time, and while you have 30 days to watch a show after you’ve downloaded it, you only have two days to watch it after you start playback for the first time.

Not everything on Hulu can be downloaded, although the company says that “thousands” of titles should be supported. In order to find them, you can tap the “Downloadable” option within the Browse menu when you’re searching for content.

Hulu is finally offering 4K and 5.1 surround sound audio on Roku

Hulu recently updated its user-facing help pages to inform customers that the platform is finally offering 4K streaming and 5.1 surround sound audio on Roku devices. Previously, only 1080p streaming was available via the Hulu app on Roku. (The platform still does not support HDR streaming.)

Hulu has had a difficult time implementing 4K on its platform, announcing the capability in 2016 on select titles and devices before removing support entirely in 2018.
Streaming in 4K on Roku will not be offered for all of Hulu’s content, of course.
Hulu’s addition of Roku to the list of supported platforms for 5.1 surround sound is great news for Hulu lovers who also own a 5.1 soundbar or other surround systems.

Hulu has announced a new type of advertisement experience that will reward viewers who binge-watch content.
The company says it aims to help the brands that advertise on its platform reach subscribers who often watch several or more episodes, one after another, in long viewing sessions. What’s in it for the binge-watchers? Hulu promises to show occasional ad-free episodes.

According to Hulu, around half of its ad-supported (cheaper plan) subscribers engage in binge-watching during their time on the platform.
When it comes to how Hulu tracks these customers, binge-watchers are people who watch at least three episodes from the same series during a single session.

Hulu claims its new ‘ad experience’ is the first of its kind in the industry — it is launching with Maker’s Mark, Georgia-Pacific, and Kellogg’s on board as advertisers.
Of course, the experience isn’t truly ad-free — subscribers are still seeing an advertisement as part of the message that lets them know the next episode won’t have commercial breaks.

Last week, Hulu’s chief marketing officer Kelly Campbell has been promoted to president — a move that signals that Hulu’s internal leadership is about marketing the service and growing the subscriber base. Disney, meanwhile, is making the bigger strategic decisions.

But one significant platform it hadn’t yet launched on was Comcast’s set-top boxes. That changes today as Hulu announced its on-demand service will as of today be available on Comcast’s Xfinity Flex platform, with support for Xfinity X1’s platform planned for the weeks ahead.
Xfinity Flex is Comcast’s streaming device for broadband customers who would use it as an alternative to something like Roku, Apple TV or Fire TV, for example.

Neither Hulu nor Comcast gave a specific time frame as to when the service was launching on Comcast’s Xfinity X1 platform, beyond “the coming weeks.” We’re hearing that it’s actually targeted for the end of March, though.

Starting May 28, Hulu is beginning to test Watch Party, its first social feature that will let viewers watch titles together and chat in groups of up to eight people. The feature is currently available only on hulu.com for a select number of titles.
The Hulu Watch Party also seems to be designed to drive upgrades to the $11.99 monthly package with no ads: The feature is available only to those who have the pricier subscription VOD tier.

The “watch together” concept isn’t new: Startup Scener offers a similar experience for Netflix and HBO, and there’s also a browser plug-in called Netflix Party (which is unaffiliated with Netflix).

Hulu will no longer be supported on some older Roku devices as of June 24th, according to a Hulu support page (via Ars Technica). The affected models were released in 2012 or earlier, and include Roku players with a model number between 2400 to 3100 and Roku Streaming Sticks with a model number of 3420 or earlier.

Those older Roku devices were already running the “classic” Hulu app, a more limited version of Hulu that lets you access content from Hulu’s library and Showtime (if you’re a subscriber).

As of Oct. 23, 2020, Hulu “will no longer have the rights to distribute certain Regional Sports Networks (RSNs) that are currently included with your Hulu + Live TV plan” provided by Sinclair, the Disney-controlled streamer said in an email to customers today.

“While we were unable to reach an agreement with Sinclair Broadcast Group to continue offering channels like your Fox Sports RSNs, YES Network, and Marquee Network, the good news is that you will continue to have access to a wide variety of sports from other popular channels including ESPN, TNT, and TBS, as well as FS1 and FS2,” Hulu said in the email to customers.

In a notice on its website, Hulu said it was dropping all 21 of the Fox Sports RSNs as well as YES Network, the TV home of the New York Yankees and Brooklyn Nets, as well as Marquee Sports Network, which carries Chicago Cubs games.

Under an expanded distribution deal, 14 more ViacomCBS cable networks are on the way to Hulu + Live TV in the form of BET, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, VH1, CMT, Nick Jr., TV Land, BET Her, MTV2, NickToons, TeenNick and MTV Classic.

CBS, CBS Sports Network, the CW, the Smithsonian Channel and Pop TV will remain on Hulu + Live TV as part of the deal. The multi-year agreement ensures you'll still be able to add Showtime as a premium option too.

I really hope that Disney will launch Hulu in Europe, this would make me seriously consider to cut the cord, with that I mean I would be willing to cancel my cable TV subscription. On the other hand, it depends on the quality of the streaming. And for live sports, cable TV is still the best option because it doesn't rely on an internet connection.

The news was first spotted by a savvy user on the AVS Forum, who picked up on an updated entry on Hulu’s support page that claims that users can “currently stream select Hulu originals in high-dynamic range (HDR), HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision on select devices.”

HDR content delivers a higher contrast range, which results in much finer, richer picture details. According to Hulu, an HDR badge will now appear on the details page of content when it’s available to stream in HDR.
Notably, HDR support has been added to most, but not all of Hulu’s original series.

As long as the email addresses on file for both accounts are the same — and they’re paying through Hulu (not a carrier) — the subscriptions will be connected automatically.
