Google has confirmed that it won't be able to provide its full Android offering to Huawei for the upcoming launch of its Mate 30 handset range.

Although Huawei has been working on its own operating system, HarmonyOS, it's not flagship ready, meaning that the Mate 30 will carry the open-source version of Android. That means no Play Store, no GMail, no Google Maps, no YouTube… no point amiright?
For Chinese users, that's no biggy. Google hasn't operated in mainland China since 2009 and local users are used to third-party app stores, though they do represent the vast majority of malware infections on Android.

But for the European market, it's a disaster. Huawei can't say that "Nothing's changed" anymore.

The Huawei Mate 30 Pro will ship without the Google Play store. This, of course, is no surprise. The Chinese tech giant is currently on a US entity list, which prohibits US-based companies from doing business with it.
Fortunately for Huawei, the company had its own app distribution ecosystem to lean upon.

Make no mistake, losing access to Google Play is nothing short of a body blow for Huawei’s global aspirations.
But a critical one?
It’s also entirely possible that this move might ultimately be beneficial for Huawei.

If the AppGallery is a global success (which, admittedly, isn’t guaranteed), Huawei will be able to steal some of that revenue from Google, which skims 30 percent from all transactions, including in-app purchases and app sales.
And you can bet that other manufacturers will be watching closely.

In a group interview following the Munich launch of the Mate 30 Pro, Huawei CEO Richard Yu talked about the huge challenge of releasing a major Android flagship without Google services onboard.

That said, it sounds like Huawei is quietly preparing for the best-case scenario: a lift of the US trade ban that prevents it from using any Google services.
When asked whether Huawei will push out an over-the-air update to add Google’s apps and services back, Yu emphatically said “over one night.” That’s probably a little hyperbolic, but the exec doubled down and said the Mate 30 update will go out immediately.

We still can’t recommend you buy the Mate 30 Pro, not unless you’re happy to jump through a few hoops and to take some long-term risks, like lack of updates.

i dont know much about the problems between huawei and google, but if huawei is not trustworthy why should i load apps from their store? i remember myself that any huawei device seems pretty close to death because of that. i wont change the store (google). i know people still buying huawei like idiots. and the black market for apps is neither nor secure, i can tell that.

Soon after the Mate 30 event, it was discovered that you only need 10 minutes to install all the Google Android apps you love, and turn the Mate 30 Pro into the flagship it should have been without the ban. But that avenue is no longer available to buyers, as a security researcher figured out how the whole thing works, concluding that the workaround might also be a security issue.

John Wu explained on Medium how it’s possible to install Google’s suite of apps on the handset:

The currently widespread method to install Google Services on newly released Huawei devices relies on undocumented Huawei specific MDM APIs. Although this “backdoor” requires user interaction to be enabled, the installer app, which is signed with a special certificate from Huawei, was granted privileges nowhere to be found on standard Android systems.
It’s important to note that the “backdoor” mentioned above isn’t the kind of backdoor you’d expect, the kind that intelligence agencies would flag for its ability to spy on the user — again, from Wu:

This undocumented API is not the “OMG Huawei is spying on us OMG” kind of backdoor many media might wish to exist. It is protected behind rigorous verification on Huawei’s side and requires user interaction to allow the permission to be granted.

Even though it looks like the US and China are coming to terms with each other and Huawei's ban might be lifted soon, the manufacturer has told Austrian newspaper Der Standard that it still won't return to Google's services.

Huawei's Austrian country manager Fred Wangfei says the company wants to get rid of its dependence on US politics, as no one could tell if there would be another blockade following the current one. That's why the manufacturer's stated goal is the creation of a third smartphone ecosystem next to Android and iOS.
In both the long and short term, Huawei wants its version of Android to stay as close as possible to Google's to burden app developers with little to no additional work.

Huawei's statement
Following this news, Huawei has provided us with the following statement:

An open Android ecosystem is still our first choice, but if we are not able to continue to use it, we have the ability to develop our own.

In content, this response from the company doesn't deny the original statements it made regarding excluding Google apps and services from future devices. We frankly read this as confirmation, otherwise the company would have offered some sort of retraction — though perhaps it could change its mind in the future if a decision like this puts a bigger dent on its recent successes.

Despite legal wrangling and trade negotiations between the two countries the ban is still in place, and in the case of Google, it means that while there are still updates and services available on older devices, any new Huawei phones (like the Mate 30 Pro, shown above) don't have access to its services.

This has been the case for months now, but today Google posted a longer explanation, which it said was in response to continued questions about the issue. For end users, especially those outside the US and China, it might not be immediately clear why the usual suite of Google apps and services aren't on new Huawei phones and now there's at least a detailed official explanation to reference.
Android & Play legal director Tristan Ostrowski also laid out the company's opposition to people sideloading its apps.

Google recently warned users against sideloading its apps on new Huawei devices, as doing so could pose a security threat.
Speaking to DPA, Android and Google Play vice-president Sameer Samat has revealed that Google has applied for a license to resume business with Huawei. If the U.S. government grants a license to Google, it would mean that future Huawei smartphones can ship with Google services out of the box.

Sadly, however, Samat did not say how long it could take for a decision to be made on the license application. In case the application is rejected, Huawei will have to continue using Huawei Mobile Services on its phones. It will also need to further bolster its AppGallery, which it claims is now the third-largest app store in the world, with more than 400,000 monthly users.

Huawei hopes Google apps and services will be available through its own app store — a new idea for the company looking to attract users to its latest handsets without the licensed Android operating system.

This is not a big deal for Huawei in China where Google services are blocked and consumers don’t really use them. But in international markets, Huawei users have been using a fully licensed version on Android.
Since the blacklisting last May, Huawei has maintained that it would still like to use Google and all of its services on its smartphones. But with the future unclear, Xu has suggested a different strategy.

“We hope Google services can be available through our AppGallery, just like how Google services are available through Apple’s App Store,” he said in Mandarin, according to CNBC’s translation of his comments.
The suggestion from Xu is one that would allow Huawei’s users outside of China to get access to the apps they have come to rely on without the Chinese firm having to run an entire licensed version of Android.
