How safe is buying is Antivirus key/serial from Ebay?

Although there are some great prices on ebay, that site has some also. Newegg and other similar sites have some if you don't mind rebates. I admit I hate bothering with rebates, and especially now that they give prepaid charge cards instead of checks.
However, when you get an item with zero cost after rebate it is sometimes worth it. I got a couple recently from Fry's.
