Hmm ... I guess you made this post from another machine then ... as an OS requires a few processes to run ... at minimum 4 to 6.

    LOL!! Quite amusing :)

On my home PC, I rarely exceed 32 running processes unless I am heavily programming, playing games, chatting, and checking email at the same time.

    <sorry no screenshot :p )

I have 44 to 46 depending on my current setup at the time (and it does change fairly frequently ;) )...

I've got 56, but that includes all of my internet software, PIM, voicemail, and various other stuff that I use day-to-day. I tend to just leave running unless I do something like play a game (and then it depends on the game.)

Currently 28 (make that 27 - forget to drop 1 for TaskMan itself) including browser and security apps, like squash, with CPU usage anywhere from 1 to 5 percent. I know the question did ask about without the browser and other apps, essentially just what's running at boot-up, but I was too lazy to make a note at that point and save it for when I got online and in here.

Quite a few instances of svchost included in that total, but that's typical -- Task Manager doesn't give any more info than that, and I don't feel any particular need for a process-analysis tool.

19 running now, after shutting down as many. I just like to keep my AV/IS/AS on, as well as the basics. Anything else I need, I start, then shut down again. Running between 14 and 18% on the CPU.

I don't consider this a very important factor but, right at this very moment I have 49 processes running.

I'm running 32 processes, but 7 of them are instances of svchost.exe !

Is there a limit to how many instances runs before it could be considered malicious?

take the mine column and you'll be seeing a lot less services while everything works like before... reboot after doing the changes. it works on my computer as supposed.

from there you can try and learn, ... it's all for the better (faster, more secure,...)

you can try safe too...that should be safe :D
