I don't use Firefox as my main browser on Windows as Maxthon is my default these days, but it's still useful. However, it is the default browser on Ubuntu. I keep it simple nowadays and just basically use six.

With the impending demise of ABE I have switched back to ABP. I will probably switch to uBlock when it is more compatible with Ubuntu.

    #1 Adblock Edge: (Keep, Enabled)
    - Filter Subscriptions, Custom Filters, & Anti-Adblock

    #2 Better Privacy: (Keep, Enabled)
    - delete flash cookies on timer, interval 1 second
    - delete flash cookies on exit (redundant: sandboxie)

    #3 Bluehell Firewall (Chopping Block)
    - light-weight, blocks some ads other miss
    - no real added value (since I can add those to ad-bock)

#4 Calomel SSL Validation: (Chopping Block)
    #5 Canvas Blocker: (Keep, Enabled)
    - block everything

    #6 HTTPS-Everywhere (Keep, Enabled)
    #7 NoScript (Keep, Enabled)
    #8 NoTrace (Keep, Enabled)
    #9 Perspectives: (Chopping Block)
#10 Privacy Badger: (Testing, Chopping Block)
    - no added value (for my browsing needs)
    - social widget replacement not really necessary
    - not a viable alternative at this time

    #11 RefControl: (Keep, Enabled)
    - block, experimenting with generic referrers

    #12 RequestPolicy: (Keep, Enabled)

    #13 Self-Destructing Cookies: (Keep, Enabled)
    - Grace Period - 0
    - Clear Browser Cache - 1

    #14 UAControl: (Keep, Enabled)
    - Block, Generic User Agent (Certain Sites)

    Current: 14 Apps

I've been making about:config changes, so some of these can be removed completely. Others are enabled on a per-site basis for sites that are anti-adblock or anti-noscript. Work on Qupzilla compatibility with sandboxie put on hold due to looming Windows 10 update and potential switch to Chrome OS.

Because it works and I'm lazy. Right now I'm looking for stability and unimpeded performance. That means, I won't be installing any new software or plug-ins until after the Windows 10 update. That means programs like adguard, which may or may not be more performance friendly, will not be considered. The same goes for browser plug-ins, since I'm looking to improve performance by removing plug-ins, but I'm putting replacement on hold. That doesn't mean that I haven't been following along the discussions and haven't been weighing the benefits. I think there is an acceptable way to advertise and when I become active again in changing my setup I consider numerous factors in making my decision. But for the moment, stability and unimpeded performance are my primary goals. I'm working on a master program so to be completely honest, my brain is shot in terms of learning anything new and I just need my browser to continue to working the way it has been.

Just saw this in your post and decided to give it a try. However, it didn't install the toolbar icon. I've looked everywhere (including the Customize option) and can't seem to find it. Any thoughts?

Sorry, I should have expanded on my question: I was curious why you used Adblock Edge in particular, since you appear to give each element thought to what it is adding (or not adding) to the setup. My understanding of Adblock Edge is that it is identical to Adblock Plus, just without a certain tickbox. Back when I was still using ADP, I weighed up the pros and cons to switching to ADE and realised it was a pointless exercise, as I just needed to untick the box to receive similar functionality but more prompt updates.

Okay, I was able to reproduce the disappearing icon by unchecking the "Icon and Menu Entries" box.
    Note: Restart Required
Go to: Add-ons >> Self-Destructing Cookies >> Check "Icon and Menu Entries"

I was also able to reproduce the disappearing icon by checking "Always use private browsing mode"
    Note: Restart Required
Go to: Options >> Privacy >> Uncheck "Always use private browsing mode"

Lastly, I search of the mozilla support thread turned up an article that claims compatibility issues with Ghostery. The article was dated back in 2013, but I was unable to reproduce this compatibility issue. Hopefully this helps.

I'm aware of the acceptable ads debate. I am not opposed to non-intrusive forms of advertising and honestly unchecking the box was not the issue for me personally. First off, I felt uncomfortable with using an ad-blocker by a mod author that capitalizes on selling the rights to white-list so-called "acceptable advertisements". I think at a subconscious level it felt a bit hypocritical. You are creating an add-on that blocks advertising (a mechanism used to monetize webpages) only to do fundamentally same thing. Secondly, the acceptable ads are enabled by default when you install the add-on. In my mind, this is a kin to websites making advertising or tracking with an opt-out the default. I am a big believer in "not without my consent". So anything that translates into opt-out instead of opt-in leaves me feeling a bit uncomfortable. I probably wouldn't feel morale wrong about this if the add-on did something else like let you write notes directly on webpages. This makes me uncomfortable for different reasons (I'd prefer they just charge for licensing and updating the program). Finally, after deciding to switch to adblock edge, I noticed a performance improvement that I did not see when unchecking acceptable ads. I'm not saying that adblock edge is actually faster as any measurement I would have made would have been largely subjective. I'm not a professional so how I evaluate applications is to the best of my ability and current knowledge level. I always tell me that if you find someone smarter than me, then please follow their advice because they are probably more accurate then I am. But this is what I've been running ever since. I've tested other adblocking plug-ins since then including blue hell firewall. I will admit that I was smitten by the idea of having only a few simple hard-coded rules. Who wouldn't be? But that pipe-dream apparently isn't going to happen.

I currently use: last pass, ublock origin, https everywhere, disconnect!

I noticed no one on here uses disconnect - should I be using something else to help with not being tracked?

I used Disconnect until recently. I did like it but I removed it because I think using both Disconnect and Ghostery is "overkill". This does not mean that I think Ghostery is better than Disconnect - I really don't know which one is better - but I just wanted to keep one anti-tracker addon.

I used (and liked) Disconnect until a couple month ago when I switched over to uBlock Origin along with NoScript (with script blocking disabled). I think uBlock might be a little more effective than Disconnect and definitely more granular -- and with the NoScript setup I'm using, it still blocks XSS and ClickJacking.

Well thanks for your thoughts :)

That's interesting. I'm not sure how well that could be explained though.

What will you switch to with it being discontinued?
