    this forum is biased!
tried pretty much most of them, however.....

as soon as i tried drweb, i purchased a 3yr.

it wasnt really a hard decision, just a few days on trial.

I only tried Norton, McAfee, and the ZA suite before discovering NOD32.

I sometimes trial different AV but I usually end up coming back to NOD32 :p

I don't even want to guess how many different versions I've tried. At one time, I never had less than 3 AVs installed. These included AntiVir, AVG, BitDefender, Avast, Norton, F-Prot, Mcafee, Clam Win, and probably others I can't think of right now. Can't remember if I tried NOD32 or if it didn't work on my system back then.

In the end, I chose not to use an AV, a decision I don't regret and doubt I ever will.

    Tried everything.......

No. 1 choice: was .......Nod32 (waiting for the proper release v. 3.0)
No. 2 Dr. Web running now .........just great!
No. 3 Avg Pro, very light and well established product.
N0. 4 Norton AV 2008, feels very good, but expensive.

I've tried pretty much everything, and still can't find something I'm completely satisfied with. Right now I'm running Avira Premium Security.

In recent weeks I have used trial versions of several security suites rather than AV programs. IIRC, it was the following list:

    Kaspersky 7
    Norton IS 2008
    BitDefender 2008
    OneCare 2.0
    [EDIT] Oh yeah, Panda too.

and in the past I had also used Zone Alarm firewall with some sort of standalone virus checker but I'm drawing a blank on which one. [EDIT] It was F-Prot. I've also mess about with some behavior checkers (TF, Prevx, etc.) and I use Sandboxie.

I ended up with Norton Internet Suite 2008 which at the beginning was the presumptive choice because I knew it was reliable and ran quietly on my machines. Mostly I had hoped to find something cheaper that worked as quietly and as well. In the end I just coughed up the $60/year because each of the others had some minor nitpicky issue that made it less desirable.
