As compared to other non-hips firewalls, for example those contained in Avira or Eset? Is it the same principal?

I guess what I am asking is if I just load the enhanced ruleset, is that enough protection? I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop.

The reason I ask is because after a couple of days, this thing is SILENT. I forget it's there. And it runs sooo light. I keep thinking I am doing/have done something wrong.

FWIW, I am running with Defensewall 3 (firewall on).

    Normally yes, it is sufficient.
Did you change the ruleset ? by adding rules, disabling existing rules, or changing the log attribute for some existing rules ?

You can check on the welcome tab, that statistics are changing, when you are using internet. Also you can see there if some packets are blocked silently.
If all stats are 0, there is a configuration issue.

    Regards,

No, I haven't changed anything. I am getting packets sent and received. No errors. No printing or connection problems. Everything is updating fine. I just figured it would be more bothersome, but I am in no way complaining. Seems like after the initial onslaught of program alerts, I almost forget it's there.

The initial onslaught of Application prompts could be solved by offering users upon install the option of pre-loaded application list that consists of the primary system application used.... just a thought ;)
