GitHub has announced that its long-awaited Dark Mode theme is now available. The Microsoft-owned open-source repository marked the announcement with a characteristically over-the-top (but tongue-in-cheek) video which we’d better show you before we go any further, as it has to be seen to be believed.

Toggling between the two modes is done in the new Appearance sub-menu of settings. From there, you can choose Light, Dark, or if you prefer, to automatically follow your overall system theme:

Although many users view Dark Mode as a preference (or as Github puts it, wanting to ‘feel like Mr Robot’), it also has other advantages, both for the user, because it reduces eyestrain, and for devices, as dark screens use less battery. Whatever reason you have for wanting Github’s Dark Mode, you’re not alone and this announcement will make a lot of developers very happy. Let there be dark.

In July, Microsoft announced that it’s adding a dark mode to OneDrive on the web, but it was not clear exactly when the feature will be available for users. This week, the company has announced via Microsoft 365 Admin center that it will start rolling out dark mode in early January 2021.

The company is now planning to release this feature for all web users (both personal and commercial accounts) next month. This move will bring the OneDrive web app in line with its iOS/Android apps and various other platforms.
Overall, the new dark mode experience will be a welcome change for users who prefer less bright interfaces, and it will help reduce eye strain.

It's been more than a year since Google launched its system-wide dark theme with Android 10, but the company still isn't done creating dark modes for all of its apps.
Google has announced that the app now finally has a dark theme.

To activate dark mode, you need to head to the app's settings in the hamburger menu and manually select dark in Application theme under General — the default system option doesn't actually respect your system settings yet. Since Google Earth is comprised of satellite imagery, most of the application won't be dimmed — the theme only applies to the interface elements like buttons and menus.

While night modes are pervasive on Android and iOS, they are less common on large screen form factors. Google is now A/B testing a dark mode for Search on desktop web.

Back in May, Chrome added a flag to “Show darkened search pages on Android.” The result was a near identical experience to using the Google Search app.

Very few of Google’s desktop webpages feature a dark theme. Highlights are YouTube, YouTube TV, and (by default) YouTube Music, as well as Google Keep.
This test of a dark mode for Google Search on the web is not widely rolled out, with only a handful of users encountering it. The screenshots here are from Windows 10 in both Chrome and Firefox.

This past week, GitHub released a long-awaited feature — dark mode. Like many devs around the world, I was hype. In 2020, a dark mode toggle for anything remotely related to tech seems like a requirement.

Flash forward a couple of days, I found myself switching to light mode for code review specifically.

I did a deep dive into the dark mode palettes of Spotify, Twitter, Facebook and more in this post.

Not only do the colors look noticeably darker than their counterparts in other apps, the secondary text color fails AAA standards! It’s important for the secondary text color to have high contrast because of how small the font is. I knew my eyes didn’t deceive me.
While contrast ratios aren’t everything, they are a simple way to quantify the difference between two colors. In this case, it’s clear that GitHub’s dark mode colors are darker. This can make it harder to read text.

Conclusion
While there is no color theory evidence that GitHub’s new code diff palette is worse, we did show that its text colors are not as WCAG accessible as many other dark mode apps we use daily.
This is still a beta feature so I have hope. GitHub, please give us the dark mode experience we deserve.

The new Google Pay app now has a dark theme

In the last few months, the company has updated the Google Play Store, the Google App, Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, and Google Translate with a new dark theme. Now, Google is releasing a similar update for the Google Pay app.

After releasing the new Google Pay app last month, Google has now updated the app with a dark theme. As you can see in the attached screenshots, the latest update for the app (v.119.1.4) brings a new dark theme that changes all the white UI elements in the app to dark gray, except for the Go India event banner at the top, which will be replaced by an appropriate dark theme banner when the event is over.

Since the Google Pay UI for Indian and U.S. users is significantly different, there are some minor differences in the dark theme implementation as well. For instance, the banner image on the U.S. version of the app is predominantly blue, while on the Indian version, it falls in line with the new dark theme.

Microsoft is improving the dark mode in Word to make it even darker. The software maker has started testing an update to Word that will color entire documents in a dark canvas. Currently, Word has a dark mode that modifies the ribbon and toolbars, but the canvas stays bright white. A future update to Word will include the ability to switch the canvas into dark mode, too.

“This has been a long-requested feature from many of Office Insiders and we’re excited to make it happen,” explains Ali Forelli, a program manager on Microsoft’s Word team. “With Dark mode, you’ll notice that the previously white page color is now a dark grey/black.” While the canvas will change, colors in a document will also be adjusted. Reds, blues, yellows, and other bright colors will be “shifted slightly to mute the overall effect of the color palette” and match the dark background.

Whether it is because of concern about eye health, or just a general aesthetic preference for more muted colors, dark modes have become prevalent in apps and operating system. Windows is no different in this regard, and with Windows 11 Microsoft is giving dark mode a promotion.

The company has revealed that Windows 11 will have dark mode activated as standard. It will, of course, remain possible to switch to a lighter option, but dark mode will be the default setting out of the box.

The news was shared by Melissa Grant, Director of Windows Enterprise Marketing during a Microsoft Inspire session about hybrid working. It seems that Microsoft's concern stems form the amount of time we now spend with our computers because of remote working, and is looking to make things easier on the eye.

Since we're spending so much more time staring at bright screens, not just for endless email, but also countless meetings, plus keeping up with our personal lives, to give your eyes a rest we're going to ship all of the Windows 11 commercial SKUs in that IT favorite -- beautiful dark mode by default. Of course, light mode is available if that's your preference.

During the Inspire event, Microsoft announced that it would ship commercial Windows 11 SKUs in dark mode by default to support remote work. A week later, the company is backtracking on this decision.

In a statement to BleepingComputer, a Microsoft spokesperson clarified that the above information was inaccurately shared during the Inspire event. The company told us that Windows 11 SKUs will continue to default to light mode, but PC manufacturers can ship devices with dark mode if they want to.

"We are aware that inaccurate information about Windows 11 shipping in dark mode on by default to all commercial SKUs was recently shared and apologize for the confusion," Microsoft told BleepingComputer.
"To clarify, Microsoft will ship Windows 11 SKUs in light mode on by default. However, OEMs can choose to ship their devices in dark mode and customers will have the choice to easily customize their experience in Settings to dark mode or light mode."

This rave over dark mode doesn't rouse much interest to me since its just as easy to lower the lightning on every screen attached to any computer if ya ask me.
It does bring back times when I use to hunt and infiltrate virus and malware kiddies sites and they ALWAYS used dark mode on their forum templates. But to each their own I suppose. It wont be taking over anything I do except being a dull annoyance. Me two cents worth on the dull mode trend.

Microsoft's Sysinternals division has released the Windows autostart manager Autoruns 14.0. The new version of the portable application comes with dark theme support and an user interface overhaul.

You may switch themes, lite and dark supported, by selecting Options > Theme in the program interface. The program is restarted automatically when you change the theme.
Note that you can't change colors, e.g. the color of the font or the background color of lines.

It's pretty much similar to the dark theme that's already available on Chat's Android and iOS versions, with dark gray in the background and a shade of green highlighting your current conversation. On the other hand, the text fields have a lighter shade of gray.
The new experience is available to all Google Workspace customers as well as G Suite Basic and Business customers.

One of our readers pointed me to a Feedback Hub suggestion that makes perfect sense: Microsoft should bring the dark mode in Windows 11 everywhere across the operating system, as offering a mixed approach makes the operating system feel like a half-baked product.

And these people are right. As you can see in this screenshot right here (captured on the latest Windows 11 preview build), the dark mode is yet to cover some essential parts of the operating system, including the file properties screen.

Users who turned to the Feedback Hub to discuss this partial dark mode available in Windows 11 agree that Microsoft should focus more on the available visual styles in the operating system. But of course, given Windows 11 is just around the corner, significant changes to the dark mode are very unlikely, so if anything, expect more improvements in this regard to be made in the next feature updates due next year.

It's finally happening: Google.com is getting a dark mode. What was once the domain of janky site-theming browser extensions can now be enabled right from the Google home page. An official post from the support forums says that dark mode in desktop Google Search is rolling out starting today and will reach every user "over the next few weeks."

To enable the feature, head to the Google.com settings—on the home page, this page is linked in the bottom left, and on a search results page, it's under the gear button in the top right. On the settings page—if dark mode has made it to your account—you'll see a new "Appearance" section where you can turn on the style.
