Users should be cautious of unsolicited emails that contain malicious links or attachments with malware, advertisements infected with malware, and requests for donations from fraudulent charitable organizations, which could result in security breaches, identify theft, or financial loss.

Increasing Risk of Cyber Attacks During Holidays Says Report

As detailed in TAU's 2018 Carbon Black Holiday Threat Report, cyberattacks usually see a substantial increase in frequency during the winter holidays [...]

After analyzing more than 16 million endpoints, TAU observed that during the 2016 holiday season organization experienced an increase in the number of cyber attacks of 20,5% above the normal levels.
Furthermore, during the holiday season of 2017, the attempted number of attacks against the endpoints monitored by Carbon Black saw a 57,5% accretion rate.

TAU's report says that the vast majority of cyber attacks that happen during the holidays use phishing campaigns or spear-phishing campaigns to deliver malware payloads designed to compromise the victim's computing systems.

New research shows that spam campaigns disguised as delivery notifications or online shopping invoices, while always a favored tactic by criminals, work even better around the holidays. That’s largely because, among other factors, most people are in the giving mood, sending packages and receiving them – and letting their guard down as they get into the spirit of the season.

It’s also a function of basic human nature, the report postulates:
“Online criminals are also behavioral scientists in their own right. They know we’re inclined to click first before we ask questions [...]"

She added, “A couple of years ago we could have confidently pointed to ransomware as the big issue, but now there’s more of a variety of threats to watch out for.”

British holidaymakers have been urged to stay alert online after it was revealed that fraudsters stole £7m from unwitting travelers in 2018.
Over 5000 people reported travel-related scams totaling just over £7m to the UK’s Action Fraud service last year, an increase on the previous 12 months, when 4382 victims reported losing £6.7m.

Get Safe Online CEO, Tony Neate, urged consumers to do their research thoroughly before booking, including reading user reviews and conducting online searches for the company in question.
“Look out for companies that are members of professional bodies such as ABTA and be wary of paying a private individual by bank transfer, even if you are offered a discounted rate,” he added.
