We will get to the bottom of this.

Thanks SammyJack, I'd forgotten that it worked that way. I had to run the program twice to get it to update to Build 70 properly. The first time it appeared to be downloading and installing the update, but then it closed. The 2nd time it worked fine. :)

Page has Prevx detected Geswall with you, because this could be a HP issue for some reason. Joe is out eating,:cautious: but have asked him to look at this thread after dessert.;)

Indeed, I have fixed one other FP today and we haven't had any others reported :) I believe I've found the correct gswserv.exe (there was only one mismarked).

I'm not sure why we would catch onto this now rather than before, but it could be that it is a different geswall version than the one you had used, trjam. Security software detecting other security software is an inevitability - security software modifies the system in literally identical ways to malware so it is near impossible to differentiate without a massive depletion in detection.

This is also possible - I believe HMP has a different layer of caching in place which can change detections. If the file is still detected, it may be that the "natural" Prevx users will not see a FP but HMP users would. If this is the case, could you send a scan log to report@prevxresearch.com? We will contact HMP with the details as to what entry needs to be changed.

well Geswall only comes out with one modification per year, Lol, 2.9. But I am interested in what Page has or hasnt found. I do know that software vendors bo play with their heuristic settings and well, HP goes with what they have so it leads me to think it is on your end.

Atomas31 is the one that found it and posted the screen shot on the previous page.

Something that may be relevant - the one mismarked file has only been seen by a couple users across the community when the other versions are each seen by literally thousands of users.

It could be that something got changed somewhere within the file which made it get detected. This particular file was also found by Avira/McAfee/Sophos but it is clean.

Either way, to the OP, I'd be interested in seeing what the file is if something is still incorrectly detected :)

I just scanned with Hitman Pro and it detected 0 infected traces. I left Prevx protection enabled during that scan and Prevx was silent, and I have heuristics set to maximum levels. Is that what you wanted to know?

I dont know, I am still straddling the fence on this whole FP issue and behavioral blockers. I guess time will tell.

yeah but our good friend may have fixed it. i am sure you have scanned before this and obviously no issues, like me. But the screenshot doesnt lie either. I dont know. I just want issues like this to fade away.

I guess the other thing is, a company like HP, we dont know how they set their scanners up which can be a issue to. Joe says it was flagged by Avira but in the screenshot it wasnt. Man am I confused.

Re: Anyone tried out Hitman Pro?

In the past I have received a Prevx detection on an obscure GeSWall driver that Brian sent to me back around build 2.7 in order to get the program to load on one of my machines. I am fairly certain that it was the only geswall.sys file of its kind, and Prevx flagged it. Rather than create a detection override, I just erased the old driver. I sure didn't need it hanging around anymore. Prevx hasn't ever hit on anything GeSWall on my systems other than that... unless I've forgotten.

The update procedure is replacing the executable that you are currently running. It is normal for the application to close since we wouldn't be able to update it as it is in use. Although Hitman Pro should reappear automatically with the new build.

Re: Anyone tried out Hitman Pro?

I have looked into the false positive and only -one- Hitman Pro user (Atomas31) has this file. He also reported it as a false positive. I have fixed the FP in our cloud database but the FP would resolve automatically in a few hours as Joe also fixed it on their end (we cache the Prevx results for a few hours).
In build 70 we made minor changes to the behavioral scan causing every file, that starts automatically when the computer boots, to be scanned by the cloud (when the file is not already known by the cloud), regardless of their behavioral score. That's why the FP wasn't seen 3 weeks ago.

Every time we change the behavioral scan, the cloud receives files that weren't received before. (Note that the cloud only receives a single file once. When one user already uploaded the file other users don't need to as the cloud already has the file.)

The thing with combining 7 virusscanners is that you have a very high detection ratio but you also get the false positives. We have a few mechanisms in our cloud, like a rescan feature (more about this here) and a false positive submit feature that resolves FPs automatically after a few hours. Also the behavioral scan filters out possible FPs as it prevents unsuspicious files to be submitted to the cloud (is where most FPs occur).

Running Prevx real-time and Hitman Pro on-demand (and both for scheduled scans). One damn light and effective combination. :)

Not bad at all. :) Also agree with your previous comment that Hitman Pro is definitely improving with each release.

found an issue with Hitman Pro on Win7, everytime i uncheck "scan system at startup" in its option, as soon as i restart, it begins to scan my system again and i find that its checked again... i tried doing unchecking it several times and rebooting, but same thing, it still keeps scanning at startup.

A similar situation for me with XpSp-3 except it's the Restore Point option that is always re-checked for some reason.
