Seems most of the casinos in Biloxi Mississippi are on these floating barges. Why is that? Do they not allow land based casinos by law? o_O

We've got some of those here. But ours don't actually float. But they have to be in contact with water from the Missouri river. So they built motes around the buildings to comply with the law. :p

RPT-Miss. casinos to rebuild, but barges questioned

LOS ANGELES, Sept 9 (Reuters) - Casino owners are preparing to rebuild in Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina destroyed gambling barges, but many would prefer to build on land this time.

Mississippi is widely regarded as one of the three most casino-friendly jurisdictions, along with Nevada and Atlantic City, and its Gulf Coast housed two major gambling enclaves -- until Katrina swept ashore, picking up and throwing some floating casinos onshore in the process.

"Right now, casinos have to be on water .... If they were on land, they probably would have sustained the hurricane," said Allan Solomon, executive vice president of Isle of Capri Casinos Inc. <ISLE.O>, which had its flagship casino in Biloxi.

He expects Isle and other casino operators to work with the state on a regulatory plan "that makes economic sense."

MGM Mirage <MGM.N>, owner of the Beau Rivage resort in Biloxi, cautions against hasty action. Beau Rivage, built on pilings, was badly damaged by Katrina but is still standing.

"It is absolutely not the time to be framing public policy. ... Discussion should take place in the coming months once the situation has stabilized," MGM spokesman Alan Feldman said.

"The advantage of offshore casinos is that there is a very unique character to the Gulf Coast. That would be destroyed if you allow casinos to move anywhere else in the state," he said.

Mississippi's legislature is expected to take up the issue. "Gaming is a key part of Mississippi's tax revenue base. It is a topic that will be discussed," said Pete Smith, a spokesman for Gov. Haley Barbour.
Mississippi's gaming law permits dockside casinos on the coast and along the Mississippi River in counties where gambling is approved by referendum.

They are taxed at a maximum combined state and local rate of 12 percent, compared with rates as high as 70 percent in other states, like Illinois, that also allow dockside casinos.

Mississippi's 29 casinos, including 13 along the Gulf Coast, had revenue of $2.78 billion last year. The resorts also have land-based hotels that generate more revenue and jobs."

Most US state constitutions prohibit gambling on state soil. The only ones that allow it are Nevada and New Jersey.

As an aside, reservation casinos are allowed due to the reservations' status as sovereign nations.

Watching the scenes of that toxic water being pumped back into that big lake down there is very concerning.... With levels 100% higher than acceptable i fear not only the environmental disaster most likely in New Orleans already but the one to come in that lake and consequently the gulf...

Left with no choice, there are no other options...

The Statue of Jesus Christ behind Saint Louis Cathedral is surrounded by about 5 or 6 100+ year old Oak Trees....Every one of them fell. However... NONE of them touched Him...It is a sight to see. All these massive wooden behemoths falling at the feet of our Lord.Call it Divine Intervention? Maybe... but it's not too late to start believing...

And that probably heavier and bigger statues fell or were blown over.....WOW!!
