Am I right in thinking that when Nod32 reports "Probably a variant of.........", it is detecting with a generic signature, and when it reports "unknown new Heur_PE virus" it is detecting via Advanced heuristics?

    Cheers

Yep, but advanced heuristics often enables NOD32 to flag something as a variant of a known threat.

So is there any way to separate generic detections from heuristic detections in NOD32, apart from disabling heuristics and re-scanning? o_O
