It would be greatly appreciated if someone could comb over my log and put me in the right direction if any fixes are needed. (I've been having a lot of pop-up trouble these last few days ... if more specifics are required, let me know and I'll post that also.) Thank you.

    Hi!

You have been infected by Coolwebsearch and some other things

Please download the latest version of CWShredder from here

If you are unable to download that file because of the Hijack, please post back. If you are able to get the file follow the instructions below.

    Run it.
Check for update, if it needs to update please allow it to do so.

Click fix/next. Let it fix all if finds.
    Reboot

Run it again (to be sure it worked)
Click fix/next. Let it fix all if finds.
    Reboot

    Do a virus scan here.
If you get report of files that can’t be cleaned / deleted please write down the filenames and locations and post that in your reply.

    Reboot

After that go to windows update and download all critical updates.

After installing go back and download some more and repeat that until all updates are done.

    Reboot

Then since it’s better to use automated tools to get rid of the bad stuff in your log use these 2 programs first before doing the final cleaning with HJT

    First use Spybot S&D.
    Spybot
Unzip, and update. Install the updates and run. Delete all that it marks in red.
    Reboot

    Then it’s time for Ad-Aware
    Ad-Aware
Install and update by using the globe icon. Restart your computer and run Ad-Aware.
Press scan now and select drives and/or partitions to be scanned. When done select all and click next. Remove all checked items and then reboot your computer.

Please go to this page and read the instructions for how to configure Spybot S&D & Ad-Aware
How To Setup Spybot SD and Ad-Aware

Then post a new HJT log as a reply to this topic.

    BTW,

Now when I restart or turn on the computer, I get a message called "00084481.exe -- unable to locate component" with text that reads "application failed to start because EGNSEngine.dll was not found."

    Any suggestions?

    Re: Follow-up log scan

    Hi plg,

Before you start, please unzip hijackthis to a separate folder. The program will make backups in the folder in the folder it's in.
These easily get lost in a Temp folder.

Check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://my.netzero.net/s/search?r=minisearch
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://my.netzero.net/s/search?r=minisearch

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://my.netzero.net/s/search?r=minisearch

So far, so good! (Although I'm keeping my fingers crossed instead of holding my breath.)

After I rebooted from doing the work in Safe mode, I got a prompt that asked which System Configuration Utility do I want to switch to:

    a) Normal Startup
    b) Diagnostic Startup
    c) Selective Startup (which I think is where it is now)

I didn't want to change anything without checking first.

Thanks SO MUCH for all of your help, Lappen and Pieter, as it is hugely appreciated!

Am I to post my HijackThis log again, or with the problems having ceased as-of-yet, is it not necessary?

    Thanks!
    Greg

    Hi Greg,

Post another log to be sure. There was so much to clean out, either of us may have missed something.
You can select Normal Startup by the way.

    Regards,

    Pieter

The only cookies that should have been removed would be the spyware cookies that adaware or spybot remove

There shouldn't be any change to hotmail

are you having a particualr problem ?
