    Re: help...

    Hi adunbar,

Before you fix anything, can you mail me a (preferably zipped up) copy of inetkw.dll
The address is pieterATwilderssecurity.org (replace AT with @)

Before you start please unzip hijackthis.exe to a folder of it´s own. The program creates backups in the folder it is in. In a Temp folder they easily disappear.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\WINDOWS\System32\SearchBar.htm

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = res://C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\toolbar.dll/sa

Then reboot into safe mode and delete:
    C:\Program Files\Common files\WinTools\ <= entire folder
    C:\Program Files\SEP\ <= entire folder
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

Then boot normally. You will now be able to update AdAware. Do a full system scan.

Also have a look here, if necessary: https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=26670

Post a new log made after rebooting once more.

    Regards,

    Pieter

Hi adunbar - I have merged your last posts with your current thread. Please stay in one thread (this one) until your computer is cleaned. Also, understand that we are all in different time zones, so it could be a few hour's before you recieve a reply. Just check back periodically (and yes, there are a few more items in your log that will need to be fixed) ;)

    Regards,

    snap

    Re: doing a check up

    Hi adunbar,

Unzip hijackthis.exe eerst naar een aparte map. Het programma maakt backups in de map waar de .exe zich bevindt. In een Temp map verdwijnen die nogal gemakkelijk.

Before you start, please unzip hijackthis to a separate folder. The program will make backups in the folder in the folder it's in.
These easily get lost in a Temp folder.

Check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = http://www.websearch.com/ie.aspx?tb_id=50138
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {87766247-311C-43B4-8499-3D5FEC94A183} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\WToolsB.dll (file missing)

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {046D6EA4-15E3-4b27-8010-45BD78A9219E} - C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~2\inetkw.dll

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {87766247-311C-43B4-8499-3D5FEC94A183} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\WToolsB.dll (file missing)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [inetmgr] C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~2\inetmgr.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinTools] C:\Program Files\Common files\WinTools\WToolsA.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ETMSGN] C:\WINDOWS\System32\ETMSGN.exe

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\WkDetect.exe

The last one is optional. No spyware but a known resource hog.

    Reboot when you are done.

    Regards,

    Pieter

    Hi adunbar,

It doesn't look like you are following Pieter's instructions. The files he has asked you to delete several times now, are still there.

Please follow his instructions, then post a new log.

    Regards,

    Hi Andrew,

What Pieter is saying, is at the moment you have Hijackthis.exe running on your Desktop.

    C:\Documents and Settings\andrew\Desktop\HijackThis.exe

When you run it from there, Hijackthis will create backup files of everything it fixes, and those backup files are going to get scattered all over your desktop. Not only is that messy, but if you should accidently fix something in hijackthis and then need to restore what it removed, you are going to have a hard time finding which backup file to restore from. :doubt:

So, very first thing you do before you do anything else with Hijackthis, is create a permanent folder on your hard drive (example C:\HTJ\ ) or give the new folder any name you want, then move Hijackthis.exe file over into that new folder (if you had downloaded the hijackthis.zip file, then you would need to unzip it so you can use the hijackthis.exe file, but you don't need to worry about that now since I can see you have the Hijackthis.exe file ok. You just need to put it into it's 'own' folder).

    Did that help?

    Regards,

    snap

    Hi adunbar,

There are still a few items in your last log that should be fixed.

The Viewpoint Manager/ViewPoint Player is optional to fix as it is a legitimate program but it is considered spyware. If you choose to remove it, you can uninstall it through the Add/Remove Programs option.

In HijackThis, place a check beside the following items.
Close ALL browsers and any open programs/windows, except HijackThis, and click *Fix checked:

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://home.netscape.com/home/winsearch.html

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = about:blank

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {18AF645C-BB3C-2BE5-D150-60550BDC2C44} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\wvymrpx.dll

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9E992732-295F-4987-8BE3-16FAC1639198} - C:\DOCUME~1\ALLUSE~1\APPLIC~1\IESERV~1\IEService.dll (file missing)

    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2CDE1A7D-A478-4291-BF31-E1B4C16F92EB} - (no file)

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [\IEService.exe] C:\DOCUME~1\ALLUSE~1\APPLIC~1\IESERV~1\IEService.exe

    O16 - DPF: {1D0D9077-3798-49BB-9058-393499174D5D} - file://c:\counter.cab

Reboot your computer into into Safe Mode and delete the following folder highlighted in bold:

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\IEService

    Then reboot your computer normally.

    -------

I am not finding any information on the "lpk.exe" file. You can check the files properties by going to the file and right-clicking on it, choose "Properties" and look under the tabs to see what program it belongs to and if you recognize it.

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [lpk] C:\WINDOWS\System32\lpk.exe

If there is nothing under the file's properties, and you do not recognize the file as belonging to any program you knowingly installed, then please upload it for a scan at Kaspersky to have it checked. If the the Kaspersky scan says it is infected, then fix the 04 line for it in Hijackthis.

    -----

Use the Disk cleanup Utility to clean out your Temp folders. Disk Cleanup Utility

Make sure you are using the most recent versions of either Ad-Aware Version SE build 1.03 and/or Spybot Search&Destroy v1.3, and that you have brought them both up-to-date. Reboot your computer after the scans, and then scan again until everything is cleaned.

You can find a tutorial on how to setup and scan with Spybot S&D and Adware here: Scanning with Spybot and Ad-Aware

Then do a FULL system scan at one of these on-line scan sites (fix what they find): Free Services

Once you are sure your system is clean, turn off System Restore, then reboot your computer to purge the old restore points. This will remove any infected files that would have been backed up in there: System Restore Instructions for XP. Remember to re-enable System Restore after the reboot, and set a new Restore Point.

Since we have discontinued the HijackThis log analysis service, and the "adware, spyware & hijack cleaning" forum is now closed, I will have to lock this thread after this post. Please see this Announcement for more information. In the Announcement post, there is also a link to a list of other sites that still perform this type of service. I'll post it here just to make sure you have the list of sites: http://a-sap.org/

Whichever site you choose to go to from that list, be sure and read their Posting Proceedures before you post your hijackthis log for analysis.

    Good luck, and safe surfing.

    Regards,

    snap
