Ok, I'll do that but why UEFI version should it not be the other one as I'm MBR not GPT?
Edit ... forget that I landed on the wrong page for some reason.

BTW. When I started this thread there was a reply link. That has disappeared so all I've got is the reply to thread button (bottom right)- not able to quote and have to do it manually. Any ideas?

With BootIt Collection you will probably get both versions.

No ideas re the Reply button. This is what I see...

When you unzip BootIt double click makedisk.exe
    PC Platform (BIOS)
    BootIt Bare Metal
    Image for DOS (gui)
    Mouse Support enabled
    VESA video
    1024*768
    Boot Options Normal
    Device options nil
    USB Device Options nil
Global Geometry... tick in Align partitions on 1 MiB boundaries
    Additional options nil
    select USB drive letter
    leave Layout and Geometry alone
    Finish

When BIBM boots click Maintenance. Partition Work.

    Do you see 2 partitions?

Ok following the instructions I don't get a boot here's what I saw:

With menus 3-6 it appears that the settings were correct. ie. the instructions seem to be setting it to the os / partition:

So I found in both settings HD1 > Evo 860 (label)
So those I left as is.

Moving on to the boot entry sections 2-5
    I found that this also had HD 1 instead of the suggested {boot} setting and so in both the device and windows memory diagnostics set that to {boot}

Not sure if I did this correctly but it isn't booting.

Nice. I'd like you to do the redo Boot without using {boot}. Does it make a difference.

Are you still getting Inaccessible Boot Device?

In BIBM Part Work, click View MBR
Is the 500 MB partition Active?

Funny you should say that.. I had decided to go back in and set them explicitly so yes:

    Hd1 > MBR0

    No go ...
    and View MBR shows Active

Should I put the M2 disk in and check how that is set?

    Let's try installing BIBM.
What size is the Win10 partition?
Is there Free Space after the partition? (below it)

Yes stop code is always the same "Inaccessible boot device"

The win 10 partition occupies the rest of the disk so err... 465GB ish.
The windows installation is not big so I guess you are asking if I could put make another partition after it?

I thought you were using 860 so the Win10 partition could be 960 MB? Or is there Free Space after Win10?

Sorry for the confusion - given the copying I've done and the fact that once I do that the labels get transferred over I though it was the 860 however, if you remember my last test was to try to image onto the 500gb in case it was the 860 that was the problem.

So right now I am on the 850

    OK 850.

In PartWork select the Win10 partition and click Resize
OK (it will do a File check)
Reduce the New Size by 10 MiB
    OK, Continue, Close

You should see 10 MiB of Free Space after Win10

    Restart
Boot from the BootIt BM CD/UFD
Setup... Click OK to install BootIt ...
Setup... Put a tick in Change all MBR type drives to EMBR and click Yes to enable support for more than 4 primary partitions
Setup... Click Yes to let setup choose the partition for you
Setup... Click Yes to install to a dedicated partition. No tick in Install to any drive
    Setup... Click OK to begin
Setup... Click OK for Setup completed successfully
    click Close
Setup... Click OK for the Remove the boot disk and click OK to restart

BM will boot to a Boot Menu
    Click Maintenance

    All OK so far?

    Click Boot Edit
    select your Win10 item
    Edit
In HD0 on the right, do you see both partitions?

On the left screen you should have

Identity Win10 or what you called it
    HD 0
Boot Win10 name (what you have called it)
    Click OK, OK again

Click Resume, select Win10, click Boot.

    I'm not hopeful.

My brain must be slow. A mate first mentioned this last year. I don't think you can boot Win10 from a M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD in MBR mode.

I know you have been booting yours but was it the Win10 on the M.2 that was booting? Did Win10 boot when the M.2 was the only drive in the computer?

HD0 on the right yes actually shows 3
    0) MBR0
    1) Evo 850 w10
    2) Bootit EMBRM

    Ok on the left shows
    HD - 0
    Boot - MBR0

So according to what you've written this should show my window partition lablel

... am going to change it and hit OK Ok

All OK, I forgot 2) Bootit EMBRM.

Yes, MBR0 should be in Boot. Not Win10. My mistake.

MBR0 is the 500 MiB partition.

    I don't have a MBR0 partition.

yes "computer said no" no o/s found so quickly reverted back to MBR 0 and now it's the same inaccessible boot device situation.

A failure. Can you uninstall BIBM.
Click Utilities, Uninstall, tick in both Removes.

Which drive boots on its own? Install it on its own and I'll think a bit.

Sorry just saw this as I scrolled up just now.
Not sure I installed directly on to the m.2 - it is a dedicated socket so not sure if that is the same as pcie.
Yes win10 boots off this if it's the only drive. I don't think it's correct that it won't boot as I did quite a bit or research on this mobo and the m.2 before I bought it.

The only problem I had was with win 7 as that needed nvme drivers but when I installed win 10 the drivers are native so it just went pretty smoothly

Windows 10 on the Evo M.2 boots on it's own no problem. Other than that the 860 boots on its own but that has windows 7 on it right now.

    Bootit uninstalled as directed ..

Wow, the M.2 boots in MBR mode on its own. I'll tell my mate, Install the M.2 on its own and install BIBM as you have just done. BIBM creates a partition in the 10 MiB of Free Space.
