The Dept Of Homeland Security and others have advised disabling Java, have you done so or not?

I have Java disabled in Opera and enabled in IE & Chrome at the high security setting. Since I do 99% of my browsing with Opera and only use the other 2 for specific business related sites I feel this is a reasonable solution.

If you want to turn Java off in a particular browser (or completely for all) but do not know how to see http://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2012/08/30/how-turn-off-java-browser/

Thanks, as is clear this is an ongoing issue and now the DHS has gotten into recommending that Java be disabled so you know that things have gotten out of hand.

PS: One article I read indicated that Oracle will be offering a patch on Tuesday (Jan 15).

I have it installed, but I haven't had a legitimate use for it in ages. Which makes me think that yes, I probably will uninstall it now...

Uninstalled it a couple years ago and haven't missed it at all with one exception. I have one annual government report to file online which requires Java. So my workaround is to virtualize my system, install Java, file the report and reboot. All gone for another year:D

Another option is to just boot off a linux cd/dvd such as Mint, which has java installed out of the box, do your business, and reboot. Not sure which would be faster or easier.. :)

There was only one site I frequented which needed Java, so I hung onto it and religiously kept it updated. Shortly after the Java security mess became major media, the site underwent major revision and now uses javascript, which is much simpler to control. At that point I became free to toally dump Java at last.

Between (among?) Java, Flash, and PDF reader, it seems that Adobe sure needs some make-up exams and remedial courses in security.

Maybe Java conflicts with their spying? :D

I have no reason to disable it, I trust my security protocols and lots of things use Java that I enjoy. Half of my sons junk is java, and my other son is a java programmer. :doubt:

always had it installed since 5 years, never had a problem, my java is always updated and so is my OS and antivirus

I hate coming across any site that would need something and not being able to run it properly

    Java FTW

The newest java exploit works for the latest and updated version of Java, so that won't matter. At the very least disable it, and enable it only on trusted websites that require it.
