Hacker Releases 'Unpatchable' Jailbreak For All iOS Devices, iPhone 4s to iPhone X

An iOS hacker and cybersecurity researcher today publicly released what he claimed to be a "permanent unpatchable bootrom exploit," in other words, an epic jailbreak that works on all iOS devices ranging from iPhone 4s (A5 chip) to iPhone 8 and iPhone X (A11 chip).

Dubbed Checkm8, the exploit leverages unpatchable security weaknesses in Apple's Bootrom (SecureROM), the first significant code that runs on an iPhone while booting, which, if exploited, provides greater system-level access.

"EPIC JAILBREAK: Introducing checkm8 (read "checkmate"), a permanent unpatchable bootrom exploit for hundreds of millions of iOS devices," said axi0mX while announcing the publicly release of the exploit on Twitter.
Since the bootrom exploits are hardware-level issues and can not be patched without a hardware revision, a simple software update can't address the newly released bootrom exploit.

Attackers are capitalizing on the recent discovery of a new vulnerability that exists across legacy iOS hardware. Cisco Talos recently discovered a malicious actor using a fake website that claims to give iPhone users the ability to jailbreak their phones. However, this site just prompts users to download a malicious profile which allows the attacker to conduct click-fraud.
This new malicious actor Talos discovered claims to provide the checkra1n jailbreak. The site even claims to be working with popular jailbreaking researchers such as “CoolStar” and Google Project Zero’s Ian Beer.

The page attempts to look legitimate, prompting users to seemingly download an application to jailbreak their phone. However, there is no application, this is an attempt to install malicious profile onto the end-user device.
The checkm8 exploit (and, by consequence, the checkra1n jailbreak) only impacts iOS devices running on the A5 to A11 chipsets. The fact that the website mentions the A13 device is the first indicator that this website is not legitimate. Additionally, the website proposes the user can install the checkra1n jailbreak without a PC, when in reality, the checkm8 exploit requires the iOS device to be in DFU mode and is exploitable via the Apple USB cable.

The jailbreak released today, dubbed “checkra1n,” will let users install whatever they like on the iPhone, with none of Apple’s normal restrictions getting in the way.
Its significance lies in the fact that Apple will struggle to ever fix it, at least in devices up to and including the iPhone X.

“Apple cannot fix it because bootrom cannot be patched after a device leaves the factory,” said a hacker who goes by the name axi0mX.
For anyone who wants to try to jailbreak their iPhone, axi0mX and a team of other iOS hackers have set up a website as a guide. It’s currently only available for download on macOS PCs. Users can then hook up their iPhone and install the jailbreak.

With the checkra1n iPhone jailbreak now available, security experts are urging mobile-device managers to keep on their toes as the powerful new tool becomes available to hackers and iPhone users who may recklessly use it.

The security concerns around Checkra1n are multifaceted. One risk factor is users jailbreaking their own iOS devices, making them susceptible to rogue or unstable apps downloaded from outside of Apple’s curated App Store.

“Checkra1n is unprecedented in potential impact, with millions of devices at risk as a result of the extensive device and iOS targets,” warned Christopher Cinnamo, senior vice president of product management at Zimperium, in a company blog post.
He noted that while the jailbreak will not survive past a device reboot, an attacker could persist on the device by sideloading an app on it. Once a rogue app is installed on the iOS device the attacker would have a permanent foothold on the handset for further exploitation.

“It is permanent in the sense that the jailbreak will continue working for the life of the device no matter what version of iOS it is running,” Hebeisen added.

Renowned hacker and iOS security researcher iBSparkes broke the silence this weekend after sharing a teaser of what appears to be successful tfp0 on a brand-new A13 device running iOS 13.3.
iBSparkes wasn’t specific about what type of A13 device he achieved tfp0 on, but this shouldn’t matter as the iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max are each powered by the same silicon, which means they should all be susceptible.

For those who don’t know, tfp0 is essentially a means of obtaining read and write rights in the kernel memory, which is something that Apple tries very hard to obfuscate. In doing so, jailbreaks can be produced, enabling system-wide customization since the operating system runs subordinate to the kernel.

Given iBSparkes’ reputation in the jailbreak community, we’re excited to see what this could turn into if released.
