What just happened? Corning is combining elements of Gorilla Glass with its flexible Willow Glass to make a product tailored for bendable phones. It won’t be ready until foldable phones go mainstream, however, so at least another few years at the earliest.

The Gorilla Glass maker is developing an ultrathin glass that is 0.1 millimeters thick and can bend to a 5 millimeter radius. The problem they’re facing currently is delivering a product that covers the demands of all customers simultaneously.

John Bayne, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Corning Gorilla Glass, told Wired that they have glasses they have sampled to customers that are functional but they’re not quite meeting all of the requirements. “People either want better performance against a drop event or a tighter bend radius. We can give them one or the other; the key is to give them both.”

In May 2018, I attended the annual Society of Information Display conference in Los Angeles and saw the first public demonstration of a foldable display
I saw for myself how a folding display could revolutionize the design of smartphones in the future.

At least three other smartphone vendors have their own foldable smartphones in the works for delivery late this year or early next year.
However, all of these early foldable devices have one design flaw. They use a plastic polymer for the display cover, which is less hard than glass and therefore easier to scratch, warp and even gouge during use.

Since Corning is the leading provider of glass smartphone screens with its Gorilla Glass, I asked the company for feedback about its work in folding glass and timetable for its use in foldable smartphones and laptops. [...] the company’s work on bendable glass for folding screens is well underway.

From what I know Youtube showed Gorilla glass has a minimum bending radius of 5mm which means if the glass folds inwards it'll have a gap of 10mm.

It is more suitable for phone folding outwards

Unless GG already overcame the minimum radius limitation........

Corning has no plans of backing down amid the challenges with the latest foldable trend in smartphone technology. The sophisticated glass specialist company is jumping right at the center of the foldable smartphone bandwagon with plans to produce strong and flexible glass covers next year.

In a recent interview with GSM Arena, Scott Forrester, Division Vice President, Marking and Innovation Products at Corning, talked about how they keep a balance between scratch resistance and durability when it comes to making glass display for smartphones. He also talked about how the company is planning to adapt to the rising trend of foldable smartphones and how the currently available technology would make the use of glass in foldable displays possible.

This means that it is possible for users to see the branding “Corning Gorilla Glass” on upcoming foldable display smartphones within a year or two.

Foldable phones have nailed a lot of hardware and software achievements, but there's one element that device-makers haven't cracked: bendable glass. Today's foldable phones use a plastic material to cover the delicate, flexible electronic display. But what if these screens were coated in ultrahard diamond dust?

One company I spoke with last week at CES thinks it's found a way to make ultralight super-hard glass for foldable devices using diamond glass.
Enter Miraj Diamond Glass, a material made from lab-manufactured nano-diamond materials.

"Nano-diamond is actually semi-flexible by itself, and we can coat flexible glass," said Adam Khan, founder and CEO of Akhan Semiconductor, which is developing Miraj Diamond Glass.

As for foldable diamond glass, the company is still a ways away. Miraj Diamond Glass won't be ready for a flexible glass demonstration until the next generation.
So even if Akhan Semiconductors does secure an exclusive phone partner by the end of 2020, and even if we don't see that phone until 2021, a diamond glass screen on a foldable phone could still trail flexible glass by years. Even so, it'd be a brilliant test of strength that I, for one, am raring to see.
