It was the Pixel phones' first foray into a more affordable price bracket -- and perhaps Google's return to the cheaper Nexus days of yore. Priced at hundreds of dollars less than its main Pixel 3 flagship counterpart, the Pixel 3A phones shaved off key features like wireless charging and water resistance. But it remained a viable alternative for Android users looking for a Pixel phone experience at a lower cost.

Now more than ever, phone-makers are targeting people on tighter budgets, who might otherwise have just held onto their old phone for another year.

The Google Pixel 4a has leaked extensively over the last month or so. The device would have been seemingly announced by Google at I/O this year, though with the event canceled, it is now unclear as to when that will happen Internal documents seen by German Caschys blog (via Android Police) point to Vodafone Germany offering the phone starting May 22.

This date is in line with the previous launch timeframe followed by Google for the Pixel 3a. Google I/O 2020 was also scheduled to take place from May 12-14 before it was shelved entirely [...] With the conference no longer taking place, Google could announce the Pixel 4a via a press release and then launch it around 10 days later.

The device will feature a 5.81-inch FHD+ OLED display with a punch-hole to accommodate the selfie camera. It will be powered by Snapdragon 730 chipset, an Adreno 618 GPU, 6GB RAM, up to 128GB storage, and a 3,080mAh battery with 18W fast charging support. The Pixel 4a will include a single 12.2MP camera at the rear, while there will be an 8MP shooter at the front. Google will reportedly not be launching a Pixel 4a XL this year.

The Google Pixel 4a leak continues ahead of the phone's official launch. After camera samples from the device leaked last week, a full-fledged camera review of the device has now been posted on YouTube.

The YouTuber confirmed to XDA that the Pixel 4a will use the same 12.2MP camera sensor at the rear as the Pixel 3, 3a, and the Pixel 4. This means we are looking at a Sony IMX363 sensor with an f/1.73 aperture, 1.14um large pixels, and OIS. At the front, there is an 8MP Sony IMX355 sensor for taking selfies. Like the Pixel 4 series, the Pixel 4a's camera app will feature an Astrophotography mode to let its users capture the night sky.
You can check out some of the camera samples from the Pixel 4a below. The Pixel 4a photos have a typical Pixel-like look with heavy contrast and a low exposure level.

Do note that the device in question is a pre-retail unit and not running the final firmware. So, it is entirely possible that Google could make further improvements to image quality on the Pixel 4a. The device is expected to be announced towards the middle of this month and go on sale on May 22.

Late last month, an internal carrier listing suggested that Google’s next mid-range phone would become available in Germany on May 22. The Pixel 4a’s launch date now looks to be delayed until June, according to new carrier documents.

Caschys Blog is back today with an updated internal listing from Vodafone showing that the Pixel 4a’s “expected delivery” date is now June 5. Using similar methods, the German publication accurately predicted the Pixel 3a launch last year. It not clear whether this data reflects international availability.

The entire Android world has been eagerly anticipating the imminent launch of Google's new budget flagship, the Pixel 4a.
Perhaps the most interesting bit of speculation lately about the Pixel 4a is just how it might be priced, especially regarding recent price and performance pressures from Apple's 2020 iPhone SE.

However, new information from Stephen Hall at 9to5Google indictates that the Pixel 4a might undercut the iPhone SE by $50 or more while offering twice the storage. Hall reports that the 128GB Pixel 4a will sell for $349, leading us to believe that the 64GB variant could cost as little as $299. If that's true, it would be quiet a blow to the narrative that the iPhone SE is this year's mid-range value champion.
A new Pixel phone with Google's implementation of Android, twice the rate of storage of the iPhone SE, and that unparalleled Pixel camera for $350 or less should sell like hotcakes, especially in the current market.

Of course, if you can't wait for the 4a, the 3a is still a great value and is likely to drop in price once the newer phone is released.

The photos are of the rear panel of the Pixel 4a that was seemingly made in September 2019.

Where is the Pixel 4a? Google’s mid-range smartphone was previously tipped to launch in May, then June, then July, and now reportedly it’ll only release in October. According to leaker Jon Prosser, Google will launch the Pixel 4a on July 13, but will only bring it to market on October 22. Prosser attributes the source of his information to some system listing, but doesn’t quite specify where and how he came across it.

So which leak makes more sense? To be honest, Prosser’s claim doesn’t quite add up. Why would Google launch a phone in July and release it three months later in October?
Still, if by some long shot, Google decides to launch the Pixel 4a on July 13 with an October release date, it would definitely be quite a departure from what any smartphone maker is doing right now.

Technically, it’s not a given that the Google phone newly authorized by the Federal Communications Commission actually is the Pixel 4A, nor that Google is actually going to announce it anytime soon, if ever.
Google doesn’t make a lot of phones, and it seems likely that since “G020” meant Pixel 4, a “G025” would be some sort of half-step successor.

Android Police has found that Pixel 4 XL users on Google’s forums and Reddit are complaining about their phones’ glass backs peeling off.
This appears to stem from the battery swelling —not an unheard of issue, but rarely with this kind of frequency. There are also claims this might be inherent to the design.

One Reddit user claiming to manage a uBreakiFix store said the Pixel 4 XL had a widely known problem with faulty connectors that lead to battery swelling.
We’ve asked Google for comment. However, it doesn’t appear to be treating the peeling backs as a recurring problem. Another Reddit user reported having to negotiate with Google to get their phone fixed under warranty.

However, they have stated that this issue is likely not due to a battery expansion issue as purported by someone claiming to work in the smartphone repair industry. With that in mind, it could simply be an adhesive problem – which is a manufacturing defect can commonly affect glass-backed smartphones.

We’ve investigated the issue and concluded that this is not related to the Pixel battery. Leaker and YouTuber Jon Prosser has shared the final update on the Pixel 4a today and he claims the device will "100%" launch on August 3. If true, this means Google intends to launch the Pixel 4a early next week.

At one point, the rumor mill believed that Google could delay the launch of the Pixel 4a by a few months and launch the device alongside its Pixel 5 series in October. More recently though, the Pixel 4a was leaked via Google's own store which hinted at its imminent arrival.

Google has also updated some of its social media images (like the header for the Made by Google Twitter account) with a small circle cutout, which seems like an obvious reference to the 4A’s display with a hole for the selfie shooter.

The phone will be sold for $349 and will be available only in black.

The phone also comes with an accented power button, back fingerprint sensor, punch-hole camera, and symmetrical chin and bezels. Availability will begin on August 20. Pre-orders will follow right after the announcement.

Amazon on Monday started taking preorders for the Pixel 4a even before the phone was officially announced. Google’s mid-range phone is now “Currently unavailable” from the online retailer after becoming a “#1 Best Seller.”

Just before noon (via Android Police) on Thursday, Amazon in the US ran out of Pixel 4a preorder inventory. The product listing has been updated to “Currently unavailable,” with the page noting: “We don’t know when or if this item will be back in stock.” The Pixel 4a is now the “#1 Best Seller” on Amazon’s “Unlocked Cell Phones” list.
The Google Store and Fi are still taking preorders ahead of the August 20 launch. We don’t have any sales figures, in the case of Amazon, but it’s an impressive feat nonetheless.

But if you have one of these older phones, you may be getting to the point where an upgrade is finally on the table, and if you are still holding onto an old Pixel (or even Nexus) phone, the Pixel 4a is probably the best phone to come around in years to get you to pull the trigger. And at $350, it's not going to break the bank.

While it's too early to tell how the Pixel 4a will hold up in the long term, at least out of the gate, there are none of the deal-breaking flaws that have affected most other Pixel phones.

The Pixel 4a is undoubtedly an incredible value on the smartphone market right now, but its weakest point is still its maker — Google.
The brand-new Pixel 4a couldn’t avoid the inevitable either, but Google’s latest snafu sounds fresh; hear me out. The company is asking its Canadian customers to ship back their existing phones more than a week before the Pixel 4a is expected to reach them.

In a sane world, trade-ins are sent back after you’ve received your new phone, or exchanged on the spot if you’re in a store. We looked for a similar logistics goof-up on Google’s part in other markets where Pixel 4a pre-orders are live, but nothing came out as silly as it is in Canada.

Following up on our coverage, a Google spokesperson reached out to clarify that the 30-day timer will start ticking only when your new Pixel 4a is delivered. The statement also points us to a trade-in support page that now has a note attached to clear up any confusion.

As for the quoted estimate, your old phone’s value will be recalculated only if it doesn’t reach Google within this new 30-day window. The crux of this clarification is that you won’t have to live without a phone, thanks to the altered rules.

Disassembly Video Reveals The Guts Of The Google Pixel 4a

Sometime or another, if you tend to repair your own phones should it ever be needed, you'll have to resort to disassembly of the device, and that's what iFixit has done with the Google Pixel 4a.

The professionals of this sort of thing over at iFixit have put out a Pixel 4a disassembly video. Which gives you a good idea of just how easy (or challenging) it may be to take the phone apart.
iFixit also notes that this isn't a full teardown guide.
iFixit's video is about six minutes long. So it's fairly short and seems to evoke that disassembling the Pixel 4a is a pretty quick process.

iFixit says that a full teardown is currently being worked on its teardown engineers. And that the full teardown is coming soon. When exactly isn't quite clear but it probably isn't too far off if it's already being worked on.

Google’s latest mid-range phone is officially just over a week old, and by all accounts it’s shaping up to be another Pixel 3a-level success. A Pixel 4a teardown today reveals that another shared similarity is the construction. [...]
Update 8/3: iFixit has issued a 6/10 repairability score. They are particularly complimentary about adhesive strip “pull tabs hiding in little windows cut through the midframe.” This general design allows for easier pulling that is “leagues better than adhesive tar pits seen in many other manufacturers’ phones.”

This clever design allows for unobstructed pulling of the tabs at optimal angles. That’s something we’ve never seen before, and it’s the reason why otherwise repair-friendly stretch-release strips can sometimes be such a headache on other phones—trying to extract them at a sufficiently shallow angle, without snagging on any nearby components, can be nail-bitingly tricky. The Pixel 4a does a literal end-run around that whole problem.
iFixit also highlights the possibilities offered by the midframe design. Namely, repairers could access the battery without going through the screen by just taking off the rear cover. Meanwhile, a screen repair would just require removing that component.

The Pixel 4a 5G finally became available for pre-order in the US a week ago, and now other countries are following suit. Though Japan got it first on October 15th, it's now available for pre-order in France, Germany, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and Taiwan, filling out the list of available countries announced at the Launch Night In.

In case you missed it, we were pretty wowed by the Pixel 4a 5G, which easily beats the Pixel 5 on value while offering a similar experience with a bigger display.

There are actually two versions of the Pixel 4a 5G: A mmWave 5G Verizon model and a cheaper version that makes do with (more useful) sub-6GHz 5G. As far as we know, that mmWave 4a 5g is US exclusive, so folks in this new wave of countries will be purchasing the sub-6 version.

Now that pre-orders have opened in this last wave of countries, Google has met the full regional availability it promised at launch.
