Google now takes longer to approve new Android apps for the Play Store

The Google Play Store is the biggest, and safest, way for users to get apps for Android devices. For that reason alone, developers are keen to get their apps in the store, but Google first has to vet those applications in a review process. In the past week, Google has quietly increased the amount of time it takes for a new Android app to go through the Play Store approval process.

First noted by Choice of Games, Google seems to be implementing this longer approval process for new apps in the Play Store. When submitting a new app, a banner appears where Google says that it will “take more time to thoroughly review” the app to “better protect [its] users.”
This change is good for Google when it comes to preventing malware and other threats from potentially seeing wide distribution in the Play Store.

Google details on a support page that developers should include a buffer period of around three days when submitting a new app.
A member of the Android Developer team also took to Reddit to further explain some concerns regarding the matter. He mentions that a “variety of factors” can add to the review period.
XDA-Developers points out the support page also mentions that “certain developer accounts” might be affected by this change.

Simply adding more time to the approval process doesn't seem to get Google there - what use will be made of this time to 'thoroughly review?' Are they adding different sorts of forensics examination to submitted apps? Requiring review by secondary investigators? Unless we know what changes in the approval process itself, this doesn't necessarily equate to greater security in google store apps.

It takes up to 7 days (or even longer in "exceptional cases") and only new developers and "certain apps" are affected:

Update 2 (8/30/19 @ 4:20 PM ET): Google says it may take them up to 7 days or longer to review apps submitted to the Play Store from certain developers.

Update (8/22/19 @ 2:30 AM ET): According to a report from Techcrunch, Google has denied that Play Store approval for new apps will take more time for all developers, insisting it is only for new developers. Google has updated the wording on the support page about how long it can take to publish an app. The page now says that review times can take “up to 7 days or longer” and “certain apps” may be subject to review times of 7 days or longer in “exceptional cases.” It’s not clear at this time what qualifies as “certain apps” or “exceptional cases.” We expect some clarification on this in the future.

Google is warning developers that app reviews may take seven days or more as a result of work schedule adjustments at the company. That means new app submissions will see delays, and even some updates might take longer to go through if they happen to trigger a manual review.

Last year, Google recommended a "buffer period" of at least three days for developers to plan for, though it later updated Play Console documentation to state that apps reviews can take up to 7 days or more in exceptional cases. These being exceptional times that we now live in, that 7-day window has apparently been extended to all app reviews.

We've reached out to Google for more information, and we'll be sure to update our coverage if we hear more. In the meantime, developers should factor these extra delays into their planning.

"Due to adjusted work schedules at this time, we are currently experiencing longer than usual review times. While the situation is currently evolving, app review times may fluctuate, and may take 7 days or longer."
