Google’s new Duplex AI sounds human, with stammers, pauses, and all. It could be a useful addition to Google Assistant or the harbinger of something much more dark and worrisome.

The Turing Test
Modern AI scientists have called what became known as the Turing test somewhat simplistic, because computer intelligence can be seen in a wide variety of actions beyond the imitation of human conversation. Even so, Turing's test has gone essentially unsolved since 1952.
AI, of course, has improved tremendously over the years, with AI-based conversations often the foundation of customer support phone trees, automated assistants, and other customer management tools.
Still, even though modern AI systems have gotten more helpful, no one confuses them with real humans. But that may be about to change.
Google Duplex
What sets Duplex apart is how realistic it is. The conversation has the pauses, breaks, and minor exclamations that are the hallmark of informal human interaction. Duplex doesn't sound like a computer. Duplex sounds like a real person making a phone call for an appointment.
So far, Google isn't promising Duplex as anything other than a disembodied appointment-making robotic friend. But it's obvious that this accomplishment has legs. The potential for human-sounding interaction has many positive benefits [...]

From the human end, Duplex's voice is absolutely stunning over the phone. It sounds real most of the time, nailing most of the prosodic features of human speech during normal talking. The bot "ums" and "uhs" when it has to recall something a human might have to think about for a minute. It gives affirmative "mmhmms" if you tell it to hold on a minute. Everything flows together smoothly, making it sound like something a generation better than the current Google Assistant voice.

Speaking of big business, I can easily imagine what will happen when the other side shows interest—what if a company like Comcast or Time Warner gets hold of Google Duplex-style technology for its call centers?

With some Duplex or a Duplex-like system in the future, an organization like AT&T could build a robot version of a human and potentially layoff many call-center employees. The AI could handle the customer service or tech support script, telling the customer to power cycle their modem, restart their computer, or whatever other useless suggestions tier 1 tech support offers. You'd never be able to speak to a human again!

Google says no, Duplex AI won't take over human call centers
Reports claimed that one company is looking to use the tech for customer service, but Google denies this.

Google Duplex is a technology that's designed to work for people, not take their jobs -- at least, according to Google.

Now a company is reportedly looking to use Duplex the other way around: on the behalf of the businesses to talk to people. The Information reports that an unnamed insurance company was investigating ways to use Duplex in call centers to handle customer service, but Google denies this. A Google spokesperson gave CNET the following statement: [...]

The Information report later adds that the insurance company slowed work on the project due to ethical concerns. The idea of calling a customer service rep and not knowing whether you're talking to a robot or a human is a bit unsettling. But Google assures that this isn't the case -- yet.

Last week, Google gave the world more information about Duplex, its experimental conversational AI that makes phone calls to schedule appointments or make restaurant reservations on your behalf.

[...] but should Duplex succeed, the logical next question is what will happen when AI that carries out tasks for people goes mainstream and must communicate not just with people, but with other bots?
[...] bot-to-bot communication will soon be critical, which is why the makers of assistants like Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant need to work together.

If the makers of assistants also agreed upon a common framework for communication, it could encourage users to rely on these assistants for an increasing number of tasks. This would open up opportunities for the makers of Siri, Alexa, and the like, but it would also boost the entire conversational computing space.

That would be a very different world from the one we live in today, where people are still most likely to use AI assistants to play music, set a timer, or check the weather.

When I first saw Google’s new Duplex technology, it was simultaneously thrilling and horrifying. It’s the kind of technological evolution that you initially see as furthering humanity and having the potential to spawn countless business opportunities.

When watching that demo, you were probably astounded by how human the Duplex assistant sounded. [...] The whole point of Duplex is to act as naturally human as possible. Google researchers found as soon as humans realize they’re taking a call from a robot, they’re more likely to hang up.

But should a bot have to out itself? And is such a requirement consistent with free speech principles? At first blush, this looks like an easy case. After all, disclosure does not necessarily result in censorship, nor does it force an anonymous speaker to identify themselves by name. Under the proposed federal bill, a bot need only acknowledge that it is an automated program — something like, “this is a bot” — to remain compliant.

On closer inspection, however, bot disclosure laws would need to be very carefully crafted if they are to comply with the letter and spirit of the First Amendment — as we argue at length in a recent draft paper.

Speech regulation must be appropriately tailored to its underlying justification, which blanket calls for disclosure are not.

Imagine, for example, that a California resident suspects an unlabeled account is a bot. Unless a careful verification process has been set up, which neither the California bill nor Senate bill presently requires, the person behind the account might have to reveal themselves just to defend against an accusation of automation. This obligation threatens the right to speak anonymously, as a recent blog post by the Electronic Frontier Foundation illustrates well.
