At the end of 2018, Google said mobile-first indexing — that is, using a website’s mobile version to index its pages — was being used for more than half the web pages in Google search results. Today, Google announced that mobile-first indexing will now be the default for all new web domains as of July 1, 2019.
The mobile-first indexing initiative has come a long way since Google first announced its plans back in 2016.

Google explained the change to how sites are indexed is aimed at helping the company’s “primarily mobile” users to better search the web. Since 2015, the majority of Google users start their searches from mobile devices. It only makes sense, then, that the mobile versions of the website — and not the desktop pages — would be used to deliver the search results.

“We’re happy to see how the web has evolved from being focused on desktop, to becoming mobile-friendly, and now to being mostly crawlable and indexable with mobile user-agents,” said Google, in its announcement today.

In my case, I do 99% of my web browsing on a PC. Using a browser on a mobile device, provides a terrible user experience compared to on a computer, in my opinion.

Exactly, I have downloaded apps for some of my most important websites, because browsing is horrible. But I think most people use a smartphone for Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.

For a while now, Google has been working on making mobile-first indexing the default behavior of its search engine. With mobile-first indexing, Google Search primarily uses a page’s mobile content for creating its search index and ranking. Google announced this initiative in 2016 and as it announced today, by September 2020, it’ll become the default behavior for all sites.

After a few small tests, the company started going all-in last year, and by December, it used mobile-first indexing for more than half of the web pages it showed in its search results. Today, that number is 70% already.

Google says most sites are now ready for its new system, but it will still occasionally crawl the desktop site with its traditional Googlebot.
That means site owners may see increased crawling by Google in the coming months, too, as the company will now use two different crawlers: one that identifies itself with the mobile smartphone user-agent and one that will look like the Chromium version it uses to render the desktop site. For the most part, though, website owners will see the mobile agent.

For most sites, this switch should be seamless, but if you only expose structured data on your desktop site and not on mobile, it’s now time to switch it on for both.

Google: Announcing mobile first indexing for the whole web

It's been a few years now that Google started working on mobile-first indexing - Google's crawling of the web using a smartphone Googlebot.

When we switch a domain to mobile-first indexing, it will see an increase in Googlebot's crawling, while we update our index to your site's mobile version. Depending on the domain, this change can take some time. Afterwards, we'll still occasionally crawl with the traditional desktop Googlebot, but most crawling for Search will be done with our mobile smartphone user-agent.

Google has delayed the date when it will start ranking all websites based on their mobile versions. At the start of March, the company said it would switch to mobile-first indexing this September. The company now plans to make the transition in March 2021.

"We realize that in these uncertain times, it's not always easy to focus on work as otherwise, so we've decided to extend the timeframe to the end of March 2021," the company said, alluding to the coronavirus pandemic as the main reason for the delay.
Moving to mobile-first indexing is something Google has been working on for the past half-decade. The search giant started experimenting with the approach in 2016.

Google: Prepare for mobile-first indexing (with a little extra time)

Mobile-first indexing has been an ongoing effort of Google for several years. We've enabled mobile-first indexing for most currently crawled sites, and enabled it by default for all the new sites. Our initial plan was to enable mobile-first indexing for all sites in Search in September 2020.

For the sites that are not yet ready for mobile-first indexing, we’ve already mentioned some issues blocking your sites in previous blog posts. Now that we’ve done more testing and evaluation, we have seen a few more issues that are worth mentioning to better prepare your sites.
