Today, Google announced that it's rolling out a new home page experience for YouTube on desktops and tablets. The new look was first spotted back in August, and it's rolling out starting today and should be available to everyone "soon".

The changes in the redesign are small in number, but easily noticeable. First, Google is increasing the size of video thumbnails, which should help users glean more information about videos at a glance, as well as provide higher-resolution video previews. To help accommodate the larger thumbnails, Google also removed some of the categories you'd see on the home page, such as the "From your subscriptions" section.

Other improvements are more functional, starting with a new "Add to queue" button that shows up when you place your mouse over a thumbnail, letting users create a playlist from the home screen.
Finally, a more forward-looking announcement is that YouTube will be adding new ways to filter your home page, as it did on mobile devices earlier this year.

After three years of feature updates, the team thinks it's time for everyone to leave the old UI behind. In March, those using the old YouTube will get a notification telling them to switch to the new YouTube.

According to Google, the old YouTube won't be available at all anymore. So, even hacky workarounds won't save you from the future. Some folks on older browser versions may also need to update to make the new YouTube work correctly. That information will appear in the notification if necessary.

YouTube has updated its desktop site to make it more touchscreen-friendly. The updated site makes tweaks to the three-dot menu and enlarges icons to make it easier to use the site from a touchscreen.

If you head to the YouTube desktop site now using a tablet or laptop with a touchscreen, you will notice the “three-dot” menu option is visible under all of the thumbnails of YouTube videos.
The new update also adds larger icon sizes and the option to swipe the player up to enter full-screen or down to transform it into a mini-player.

Alongside better support for touchscreen devices, YouTube’s latest update also includes improvements to “Watch History,” which now tells you which videos you watched on a particular day / date for better organization in your video watching queue.

YouTube rolling out black dark theme, ‘Ambient Mode,’ and other video player updates

After testing for the past few months, YouTube today officially announced several design updates, including Ambient Mode, to the video player across Android, iOS, the web, and smart TVs.

In response to user feedback, YouTube has updated its dark theme to be “even darker so the colors truly pop on your screen” on the web, mobile, and smart TVs. It’s currently gray and will soon be closer to YouTube Music’s black background.

When that theme is on, you can enable a “subtle effect so the app background color adapts to match the video.” YouTube’s Ambient Mode tints your phone’s status bar and the strip that contains the video’s title just below the player. “Dynamic color sampling” is leveraged with Google “inspired by the light that screens cast out in a darkened room and wanted to recreate the effect so viewers were drawn right into the content and the video takes an even greater focus on our watch page.”

Ambient Mode is available on web and mobile when dark theme is enabled, while Google is also using that theming in playlists as part of a card that shows “more details about each playlist so viewers can easily jump right in.”

The video player is picking up features like pinch-to-zoom, which is rolling out starting today on Android and iOS, in landscape. Additionally, precise seeking on desktop and mobile will “drag or swipe up while seeking to display a row of thumbnails in the video player.”

How to disable YouTube's new Ambient Mode playback feature

Google announced the rollout of a new design on its YouTube website today. After gathering input from "thousands of viewers around the world", Google decided to give YouTube a "cleaner, more lively design".

One of the main changes is a new ambient mode, which displays a glow around the video area that adapts the background color of that area to the main color of the video. Ambient mode is activated automatically in dark mode. Google notes that it has updated the dark mode design "so that the colors truly pop" on user screens.

The feature, which is rolling out to desktop and mobile versions of YouTube, looks to become a controversial one. Google claims that it received "overwhelmingly positive reactions from users during testing", but first reactions on sites such as Twitter or Reddit paint a different picture. Some like ambient mode, others dislike it. Some find it distracting, others don't want it to change dark mode's color scheme while playing videos.
