Google has started warning users when they search for a topic that is likely to have poor results, as part of its effort to tackle “data voids” on the search engine.

The new warning was spotted by Renee DiResta, an academic who studies misinformation at Stanford University. “It looks like these results are changing quickly,” Google will now caution users. “If this topic is new, it can sometimes take time for results to be added by reliable sources.”

“First time I’ve seen this response from Google Search,” DiResta said. “Positive step to communicating that something is newsy/breaking (my search was for a breaking culture war story), and highlighting that facts are not all known or consensus on what happened is still being formed.”

In a blogpost, Danny Sullivan, public liaison for search at Google, said: “We’ve trained our systems to detect when a topic is rapidly evolving and a range of sources hasn’t yet weighed in. We’ll now show a notice indicating that it may be best to check back later when more information from a wider range of sources might be available.”

Google has confirmed that the search engine has changed how it creates titles for the search result listings. Google said “last week, we introduced a new system of generating titles for web pages.”

What changed. Previously, Google often used the query the searcher entered into the search box when formulating the title of the search result snippets. But now, Google said “generally” Google “will no longer” use the query when making these titles. Instead, Google has a new system to generate these titles that the company says “describe what they are about, regardless of the particular query.”

Google said it is now “making use of text that humans can visually see when they arrive at a web page.” Specifically, Google is now considering “the main visual title or headline shown on a page.” This is content that site owners often place within <H1> tags, within other header tags, or which is made large and prominent through the use of style treatments, Google explained.

Google Search adding even more site context to the ‘About this result’ panel

Earlier this year, Google Search started showing “About this result” to give people more context about a website before they click. At Search On 2021, the company announced three new sections that will appear in the panel.

In addition to Wikipedia descriptions, index date, and an explanation for each link, Google will now show the site’s own description. The “In their own words” section only appears if a publisher has provided this information.

One of the biggest focuses of the Google Search On event this year is the use of MUM — Multitask Unified Model — technology to better understand and map the world’s data, as well as to better share it with you through search. For Google Search, this takes the form of a redesign, launching today, that makes it easy to find exactly what you’re looking for, not just with text but images as well.

Leaning on Google’s MUM smarts, the search results page is gaining a few new tools to help you better learn about a topic. For some searches, you’ll find a new section called “Things to know” that offers some of the most important tidbits about that subject, in a similar format to the “People also ask” section.

As of today, Google Search is no longer officially supporting Internet Explorer 11, marking the beginning of the end for Microsoft’s now-ancient browser.

Keeping web apps compatible with Internet Explorer 11, as you might expect, requires additional work on the developer’s part, with Google having opted up to this point to maintain support for the legacy browser. That’s changing today, according to a tweet from Malte Ubl, a software engineer at Google, sharing that the company’s flagship Google Search is no longer officially supporting Internet Explorer 11.

According to the tweet, the Google Search team “did the math,” presumably meaning they’ve calculated the cost of maintaining proper support for Internet Explorer 11 compared to the value of keeping those customers. From their latest decision making, Google has seemingly decided that “it is time” to leave Internet Explorer 11 behind, at the very least with Google Search.

Importantly, Google has not simply cut off Internet Explorer 11 from using Google Search, leaving people unable to search the web. Instead, Internet Explorer customers are now shown a rudimentary “fallback experience” for Google Search, which can perform basic searches but isn’t as fully featured as Google is on modern browsers. To put it plainly, the results pages are unattractive, but at least workable for those who simply cannot use Chrome, Edge, or Firefox.

Google announced today it’s changing the way search works on mobile devices, initially in the U.S. Now, when you reach the bottom of a set of search results on your phone, you won’t have to tap to go to the next page. Instead, the next set of results will automatically load so you can continuously scroll down to see more information.

The change will roll out on the mobile web and will be supported on the Google mobile app for both iOS and Android in the U.S. for most English-language searches for the time being. Because it’s a staggered release, you may initially encounter some results which scroll and others that do not.

The continuous scroll could also give Google more flexibility in terms of ad placement.

While Google didn’t publicly detail its plans for ads with this change, the company told us upon follow-up it will redistribute the number of text ads that appear between the top and bottom of pages for U.S.-English mobile queries. Now, text ads will show at the top of the second page and beyond, while fewer text ads will show at the bottom of each page. But, there is no change to how Shopping and Local ads show at this time, we understand.

Google Search will rank desktop sites based on ‘page experience’ starting in February

Since August, Google has been using a “page experience” metric to determine how websites appear in mobile Search. Page experience ranking is now coming to the desktop version of Google Search from February 2022.

Page speed and other experience metrics that quantify how an end user interacts with a website is now one of Google’s preferred methods for determining how to rank results in Search. Page experience incorporates speed (load time), responsiveness (interactivity), and visual stability — e.g., tapping the wrong button due to a site unexpectedly moving during loading.
Those three Core Web Vitals provide a “holistic picture of the quality of a user’s experience on a web page.”

Google has announced that it has updated its search results with a new suicide prevention number in the United States to ensure people get connected to counselors as quickly as possible during critical moments. The firm said that hotlines are posted at the top of search results related to suicide in dozens of countries and most recently rolled out the feature in Costa Rica, Pakistan, and Belgium.

The 988 hotline number is provided by 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.

In a new update to the Google Search results page, the search engine is now consistently making it clear exactly how words you put in quotes appear on the page.

But when you put some of your query into quotation marks, Google makes sure to find those exact words in that precise order. Most of the time, the search results page would also show your quote in its proper context on the page.

Today, Google has announced that its search results page will now always show the quoted words in the context of how they appear. For instance, one previous exception was if the words appeared in the page’s navigation menus or in any other place that wouldn’t make a useful snippet.

Today’s change was apparently made in response to feedback, with Google Search users wanting to always see exactly where on-page the quote appears. In the long run, it’s a fairly minor tweak, but it could make things easier for some, or at least make it more obvious why a particular page is appearing as a result.

Google testing large favicons and site names in mobile Search, Discover

Back in 2019, Google added a favicon to every mobile Search result and unsuccessfully tried to do the same a year later on desktop. Google is now testing a mobile Search tweak that uses large favicons and gives more prominence to site names.

In the top-left corner, these noticeably larger favicons are housed in a white circle as the site name appears next to it; the path remains, but now appears underneath in a secondary position. When there are multiple (grouped) results from the same site, the other page just shows a path, which is also the behavior today.

These large icons do catch your eye and are also appearing in Google Discover on Android, though without the circle. On the content feed, it replaces how favicons and site names appear at the bottom of cards after cover images and headlines.

It comes as Google tried to bring favicons to desktop Search results in 2020. The design was criticized for making every result look like an ad and the company backtracked.

Google is using AI to make search result snippets better

When you search with certain queries on Google, the results will yield a featured snippet – a short paragraph giving you a quick explanation of whatever you were looking for. Sometimes it works great, and sometimes it misses the ball game completely, but now Google is employing its artificial intelligence smarts to improve the quality of the snippets.

In a blog post Thursday, Google explained that it's now using its latest AI model – the Multitask Unified Model (MUM) – to deliver the featured snippets. This model understands the idea of consensus, meaning that it can cross reference a snippet it found with other high-quality sources online to see whether it fits the bill.

"We've found that this consensus-based technique has meaningfully improved the quality and helpfulness of featured snippet callouts," the company said.

Google also said it would start showing content advisories in more places. These warnings are shown when Google's algorithms aren't entirely sure of the quality of the search results produce, often when a topic is fast evolving.

I am still waiting for the new search to match the functionality from ~2014. Back then, you could search for things via url and direct quotes. Nowadays, most often you get pure unrelated nonsense. For me, the search (all engines) has been largely useless for a good few years.

if you simply search for the name of a game in Google search, you might be presented with a “Play” button that can instantly launch the title.

The Nerf Report’s Bryant Chappel appears to be the one who noticed the change, and he quickly discovered it’s not limited to Google’s own Stadia cloud gaming service, either. He says it works with Amazon Luna, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and Nvidia’s GeForce Now, too.

There’s still friction — you need to be logged into an account that’s associated with these cloud gaming services or else you’ll just get a signup page, and there may still be intermediate prompts. Also, it doesn’t appear to work with all games.

When one must use the same search terms on multiple search engines, to ferret out the actual information, I'd have to agree with both of you that Google leaves "a lot to be desired" at best, and it's results are "mostly useless" at worst. While it remains 'king of the hill', it ceased to be reliable or trustworthy long ago....about the same time its motto "Don't be evil" became a bad joke.

For me Google dork "site:<URL>" still works good enough most of the time. It may fill search results with another sites, but first search results still seem to be from specified URL.

I think that not only Google is to blame. There is more and more websites. As number of websites increases number of websites with scam increases. Scam websites SEO probably also gets even better.
Around ~2009 I saw search results with medical scams that urged me to pay for some not-independently-tested supplements that were claimed to treat medical conditions just as good, or better than actual drugs. Those sites unfortunately made quite a good job mimicking medical jargon to sell those unproven therapies. It was all back in ~2009... in non-english language.
I suppose decade later scams in english part of world wide web could be so good that you need to have subject-related PhD to elaborate why particular site is a scam. And that is poisoning search results of world wide web, so that triggers changes in search engines that tries to catch up and adapt. Adapting means human judgement and biases comes out. And even political decisions are made along the road.
It seems for me like free, neutral, purely-automatic, general-purpose web search engine that rejects only scams is an utopia.

Google is not to blame, but ... in a world where getting ranked high = money, and search engines promote rank based on IMHO trivial things like "certain keywords" or "page load speed" or alike, you end up in an unwinnable race. If content promotion was based on other criteria, we wouldn't be in the situation we are in today, and that goes across the board.

Over the coming months, it will roll out several updates to Search aimed at making it easier for people to find helpful content created primarily for humans rather than the attention of algorithms.

Starting next week, Google will unleash what it's calling the Helpful Content Update. This is designed to downgrade unoriginal content deemed to be of low quality. In particular, it will try to surface better-quality educational materials, along with more useful entertainment, shopping, and tech-related content.

This week’s episode of the Freakonomics Radio asks the question: “Is Google Getting Worse?” The average complaint is something along the lines of: “I feel like I’m seeing more ads, more links that might as well be ads, and more links to spammy web pages.”

The episode goes into the history of Google Search ads with former executive Marissa Mayer, who was at the company for 13 years and led the search engine for a period. At a high level, Google in the early days found that there were “3 percent more searches from people who had ads than didn’t.”

So basically, there was an appreciable difference over a long period of time that people actually liked Google search results more and did more searches when they had ads than when they didn’t, which I thought was really validating.

With a simple tweet posted two days ago, Google has announced one of the most revolutionary changes the company is bringing to its web search service: paged results will be replaced by continuous (aka "infinite") scrolling, so user can "continue to see more search results easily."

"When you reach the bottom of a search results page," Google said, "you'll now be able to see up to six pages of results" at the same time before being offered a classic "see more" button to turn the page. So continuous scrolling won't actually be completely continuous or infinite, even though the novel approach will change the search conventions Google has followed since the beginning of its commercial venture.

Continuous scrolling will be first available for users of Google Search in the US, and just for English search results. The new feature was first introduced on mobile in October last year, when Google highlighted how continuous scrolling would make searching seamless and easier.

When I search for Viva Wallet and Hiba Abouk I don't get to see them, but I do get them with Torta Caprese.
