    Maybe it also protects better against snooping. But that's nontrivial, I know.

    Not only does this (hopefully) give Google more security, it should also free up bandwidth on the non-private cables, so it is a WIN for consumers. I don't see how this can be considered a bad thing. As long as they don't have a monopoly on cables, it's good.

    That wired article is clickbaity. They bought and paid for their own cable which is only for their data. I'm not sure why the article author thinks they need to share that when other cables are already there and fully functional.

    When there is a shortage of something, prices go up, when there is abundance, prices go down. This cable will increase the abundance of bandwidth on non-private cables.
