Gmail gets a useful right-click menu

Google is giving Gmail a new right-click menu. And it’s about time. While you’ve long been able to right-click on any email in your inbox, your options were always limited. You could archive an email, mark it as read/unread and delete it, but that was about it. Now, as the company announced today, that’s changing and you’re about to get a fully-featured right-click menu that lets you do most of the things that Gmail’s top bar menu lets you do, plus a few extra features.

Google is bringing AMP, its cut-down version of HTML, to email. Starting today, Gmail on the Web will be able to support embedded AMP content, with support rolling out to mobile clients later. Gmail will also be joined by Outlook.com, Yahoo Mail, and Mail.Ru, with their respective developers promising to add support soon.

The embedded AMP content will be able to offer features such as interactivity without having to click away from your inbox.
For example, an online store could send you an email about a product or promotion you're likely to be interested in, and the AMP embed could allow scrolling through pictures of the products and even initiate the purchasing process.

It would be dangerous to support the browser's full, unrestricted range of JavaScript capabilities in an HTML email, but that same danger doesn't exist for an AMP email, because the JavaScript library is carefully controlled and limited.

That same danger does not exist - unless vulnerabilities are found in the javascript engine. So if one believed emails were ... let's call them safe, now one needs to think about script execution. Hm.

Fifteen years of feature creep have left Gmail feeling a little cluttered and over-burdened for some users, including Michael Leggett, who served as the product’s lead designer from 2008 to 2012. (Fast Company has an interview with Leggett about the extension.) So who better to help strip Gmail back to its simpler roots? His free Chrome extension, Simplify, does just that, polishing away all the Gmail excess leaving only its most basic and important functions exposed with easier to find shortcuts.

Gmail is been a snail ever since they redesigned it adding icon/delete/move functions on the same line as the emails etc.
That's what we get with free service from the big drivers-more gumming up functions, less responsiveness. Spam about the same too

I find Gmail to be OK even with the bloat ... *cough* ... added features.

But decided to stick with the bog standard bloated, sorry, feature improved Chrome.

Earlier this year, we announced the launch of Gmail confidential mode for G Suite in beta. On June 25, 2019, this feature will become generally available and your users will have the option to send emails with confidential mode.
At launch, confidential mode will be set to default ON for all domains with Gmail enabled, unless you choose to disable this feature (see instructions below).
Why you’d use it
Confidential mode provides built-in information rights management controls in your emails by allowing senders to create expiration dates and revoke previously sent messages. Because a sender can require additional authentication via text message to view an email, it’s also possible to protect data even if a recipient’s email account has been hijacked while the message is active

Additionally, with confidential mode, recipients don’t have the option to forward, copy, print, or download their content or attachments.

Email chain hell on Gmail is getting an upgrade. The mailing system will soon allow its users to send emails as attachments without having to forward or download them first. Or as Google puts it, “You can now attach emails to other emails in Gmail.”

Fervent emailers can attach as many emails, which will appear as an .eml file, as they like. Users who love to have multiple tabs open may also be pleased to hear that the attachment will open in a new window.
Now for the big question: why would someone want this? Let’s go to Google directly:

"We’ve heard from you that there are situations where attaching emails makes more sense than forwarding separate emails, like wanting to forward multiple messages related to a single topic. With this new functionality, you can do exactly that. Sending emails as attachments allows you to write a summary email message to your recipients, and attach the set of supporting emails that recipients can directly open in their mail client."

Google has started rolling out a new Gmail feature that'll make looking for specific emails in your overflowing inbox much less painful. The feature, called "search chips," will help you narrow down the results you get.

Say, you get a hundred or so results when you type in the name of a co-worker you've been working with for years. With the search chips' help, you'll be able to narrow down the choices based on whether or not they have an attachment and even on the kind of attachment (PDF, spreadsheet, text file) they have.
As TechCrunch notes, you can already search for emails manually typing in filters like "has:attachment" and "from:[email address]," but this takes the difficulty out of the process.

The feature will make its way to G Suite users first, but the tech giant told TC that it will also roll out search chips for consumer Gmail accounts in the near future.

Google is rolling out a new quick settings menu for its two billion Gmail users, which makes it easier to find and try out different layouts, settings and themes.

The niftiest part of the quick settings feature is that it allows Gmail users to immediately see the changes being considered before applying them.
Google started rolling out quick settings for G Suite and consumer accounts on Tuesday, but it might take a few days for users to see the new menu, which is displayed after clicking on the gear icon.

"We're making these options easier to find, and letting you explore them in real time, so your actual inbox will update immediately to show you exactly what the setting will do. We hope this makes it easier to set up Gmail the way that works best for you," Google said in a blogpost.
Google noted that the quick settings menu only makes it easier to access existing Gmail settings and that there are no new settings. Additionally, the update won't change your current Gmail settings.
