The group that brought us the Pixelbook and Pixel Slate is being downsized

A report from Business Insider claims that Google has axed "dozens" of employees from its laptop and tablet division. BI's sources describe the move as "roadmap cutbacks" and also say that Google will likely "pare down the portfolio" in the future.

The division is responsible for the Pixel phones, Google Home speakers, the Chromecast, Google Wi-Fi, and lately, the Nest smart home division.
For "laptops and tablets," the group's most recent hardware products have been the Pixel Slate and Pixelbook. The Pixel Slate was a weird Chrome OS tablet with a detachable keyboard, made as a competitor to the Microsoft Surface and Apple iPad Pro.

The move comes after the group received pressure to turn Google Hardware into "a real business" from higher-ups at Google/Alphabet. It's easy to imagine that the laptops and tablets—which are Google Hardware's most expensive products—were selling the worst.

But if you believe the recent reporting around the matter, we may never see a true follow-up to the high-end Chromebook. Google has never been afraid to kill projects, and its Chrome OS hardware might be next.

This report comes around five months after Google announced its latest entry in that lineup, the Pixel Slate 2-in-1. It was less a follow-up to the original Pixelbook, and more a sidestep. It felt premium in the same way the Pixelbook did, but its detachable keyboard made for a very different experience.
Unlike the Pixelbook, the Slate wasn’t well-received.

For those of us that hoped Google would continue to invest in Chrome OS, the ramifications of these reports are disappointing. The Pixelbook was a unique laptop, especially in its aesthetic. But until we learn more, we can at least trust that Dell, Lenovo, and HP will keep the party going on their own.

Google debunks rumours that it's scaling back its hardware efforts

A Business Insider report last month claimed Google was redeploying staff working on its 'Made By Google' product lines.
At the time, Google refused to comment on the rumours, but this week told The Verge that it has new laptops and tablets on the way.

This has been backed up by a report at 9to5Google, which notes that Google ran a session dubbed 'Google Hardware for Business' at its Cloud Next 2019 conference, where it mentioned that new devices were on the way, complete with a new business-led focus.

"We think there's some unique things we can do differently than the Pixelbook and Pixel Slate that are going to really help give them what they're looking for when they're working in this new modern cloud-first era," said Pixelbook Group product management lead Steve Jacobs, according to the report.
Google has offered up any further details about its incoming hardware, but leaked video (below) recently showed off what could be the firm's next-gen Pixelbook.

Here's an interesting little nugget of info to chew on: Google's decided to step away from its self-made tablets and focus instead on the laptop form.

But, as I learned today, the company did have two smaller-sized tablets under development — and earlier this week, it decided to drop all work on those devices and make its roadmap revolve entirely around laptops instead.
A couple of clarifying points here: First, none of this has any impact on Pixel phones.
And second, when Google talks about a "tablet," it means a device that detaches completely from a keyboard base or doesn't even have a physical keyboard in the first place [...] The Pixelbook, with its attached keyboard and 360-degree hinge, falls under Google's definition of "laptop."

A Google spokesperson directly confirmed all of these details to me. The news was revealed at an internal company meeting on Wednesday, and Google is currently working to reassign employees who were focused on the abandoned projects onto other areas.

Since 2017, the Google Pixelbook has maintained a spot on our list of the very best Chromebooks you can buy, with tasteful design and processing headroom that keep it competitive three years later. Yet you can’t buy it from Google anymore — it’s out of stock, and the company is strongly suggesting it’s been discontinued for good.

Here’s Google’s full statement:

We are proud of the success of Pixelbook, which will continue to receive the latest versions of Chrome OS per our auto-update guidelines. While Pixelbook is out of stock on the Google Store, Pixelbook Go, which delivers similar high-performance elements in a familiar form factor, is available starting at $649.
While Google declined to outright say that the Pixelbook has been discontinued, it seems unlikely that it would de-list every model in the US and UK (as spotted by 9to5Google) or talk about end-of-life plans like how it’ll continue to receive updates, if Google was planning to bring it back.

Google said last June that it would refocus its Chrome OS hardware efforts on laptops instead of tablets like its ill-fated Pixel Slate. It’s been less than a year since the Pixelbook Go came out, so it’s possible more laptops are on the way.

A new report alleges that Google is highly unlikely to launch a new version of the Pixelbook in 2022, meaning we could be in for a long wait to see a Pixelbook Go follow-up.

While there was little evidence to suggest that a new Pixelbook was definitely on course for release in 2022, a statement at a recent Qualcomm press event in London hints that we won’t see an update to the original “premium” Pixelbook until 2023 at the earliest.
According to Trusted Reviews, when asked about a potential 2022 Pixelbook release, Chrys Tsolaki, Retail Manager for Chromebooks at Google said: “Next year [2022] there won’t be anything coming. In future I don’t know.”

After some stops and starts, Google is returning to tablets, but with a smart home twist. The company first teased the upcoming Pixel Tablet at I/O this year, saying the device would be launching in 2023. Though that release window is at least several months away, Google was eager to share more details at its hardware launch event today.

Google’s vice president of product management Rose Yao said during the keynote that the company thinks of the tablet as part of its Pixel portfolio of products, and that it didn’t feel complete without a “large screen device”. That might be confusing if you recall the ill-fated Pixel Slate and Pixelbook, which were “large screen” Pixel-branded devices.
