It hasn't had a UI update to match the company's other tools in years though, and a Material-design makeover is incoming. The filtering and search will also be revamped, and they claim it will be easier than ever to start a new group.

Interested users can sign up here to try out the beta, well before the new interface becomes mandatory for all users. That is especially important as they provide feedback on features that are "being considered for deprecation" like embedding groups in web pages or being able to view original message headers.

A Google Groups Material Design revamp that’s been in beta for several months will become the default for all users starting next week, the company announced in a blog post. The new interface, which has several “highly requested features,” according to Google, includes a new mobile design, updated collaborative inboxes, and replaces tags and categories in groups with labels.

The mobile redesign of Groups will do away with the old and surprisingly outdated look and give it an appearance closer to the desktop version. It also will make it easier to browse and search for groups on mobile, manage membership settings and read group conversations.

The update to collaborative inboxes, which allow teams to use a Google Group as an email list, will add filters and quick searches so users in a group can find conversations in a group.

Google: New Google Groups becoming the default for all users on September 15, 2020

We’re planning to migrate all users to new Groups at a future date. At that time, classic Groups will no longer be available.
Note that you can use the Help Center to see a list of the features that we don’t plan to add to new Groups before this migration.

Google has either turned off RSS support in Google Groups without telling anyone, or has failed to notice that RSS in Groups no longer functions.

Lately, RSS has been a low priority for tech companies focused on content distribution schemes that are easier to control and monetize, though it's still appreciated by those who need to follow updates across a wide range of websites.
Google never made Groups RSS feeds obvious. RSS links were previously tucked away on the About page of any public Google Group. But now they've vanished entirely.

Earlier this year, questions about the disappearance of RSS support in Google Groups began to appear on the Google Groups support website.
Work around the problem
Those affected by the disappearance of RSS have suggested several workarounds, like using RSS.app to generate a feed from a specific Google Group.

In an email to The Register, Feross Aboukhadijeh, an open-source developer who runs Socket, expressed dismay that RSS has stopped working in Groups.

"I'm disappointed that the RSS feeds feature was removed," said Aboukhadijeh. "It was working perfectly fine and probably only a minimal maintenance burden to the Groups team."
