Google confirms ‘quantum supremacy’ breakthrough

Google says that its 54-qubit Sycamore processor was able to perform a calculation in 200 seconds that would have taken the world’s most powerful supercomputer 10,000 years. That would mean the calculation, which involved generated random numbers, is essentially impossible on a traditional, non-quantum computer.

IBM Research Blog: On “Quantum Supremacy”

Recent advances in quantum computing have resulted in two 53-qubit processors: one from our group in IBM and a device described in the leaked preprint from Google. In the preprint, it is argued that their device reached “quantum supremacy” and that “a state-of-the-art supercomputer would require approximately 10,000 years to perform the equivalent task.” We argue that an ideal simulation of the same task can be performed on a classical system in 2.5 days and with far greater fidelity. This is in fact a conservative, worst-case estimate, and we expect that with additional refinements the classical cost of the simulation can be further reduced.

"A quantum computing future is unlikely, due to random hardware errors...

For computers to function properly, they must correct all small random errors. In a quantum computer, such errors arise from the non-ideal circuit elements and the interaction of the qubits with the environment around them. For these reasons the qubits can lose coherency in a fraction of a second and, therefore, the computation must be completed in even less time.

In classical computers, small noise is corrected by taking advantage of a concept known as thresholding. It works like the rounding of numbers...Further errors can be corrected by introducing redundancy...

Quantum error correction codes are a generalization of the classical ones, but there are crucial differences. For one, the unknown qubits cannot be copied to incorporate redundancy as an error correction technique. Furthermore, errors present within the incoming data before the error-correction coding is introduced cannot be corrected..."

Data Security at Risk as Quantum Computers Gain Momentum

Recently Google published a paper titled, Quantum supremacy using a programmable superconducting processor. In this paper, researchers detail how a quantum computer was able to outperform a classical computer in a computationally time intensive task. Specifically, they compare the performance of state-of-the art classical supercomputers to their quantum computer in the task of sampling random bitstrings (list of 0s and/or 1s like {0000101, 1011100, …}).
