Google CEO Sundar Pichai is now also the CEO of Alphabet, Google’s parent company.
As part of the shakeup at the search giant, Google cofounders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who previously acted as CEO and president of Alphabet respectively, will step down from their roles. Page and Brin plan to continue to play a role as members of the Alphabet board of directors.

The change was made, Page and Brin said, to “simplify our management structure” and because they no longer see the need to be involved in day-to-day management of the company founded in September 1998 that is now 21 years old.

“We’ve never been ones to hold on to management roles when we think there’s a better way to run the company. And Alphabet and Google no longer need two CEOs and a President,” Page and Brin said in a letter released today.

In a strictly technical, definitional sense, this is an “era-changing” moment because there’s a new CEO for Alphabet. Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the founders of the company, are stepping back from running things and any time the founders change jobs, it means something. Arriving randomly on a Tuesday afternoon, it felt surprising and big.

Pichai is in charge, but he doesn’t have ultimate power. Page and Brin are not in charge, but they control the company. It’s a situation as convoluted as the corporate structure of Alphabet itself.
They did promise to “continue talking with Sundar regularly, especially on topics we’re passionate about.” It’s something to watch out for in the future, but it’s also not the most important job Pichai has right now.
His most important job lies within Google still, and it’s not just cleaning up the effects of Google’s culture on its products. Instead, it’s stabilizing the culture itself.

If the first era of Google was developing the technology, and the second era was growing to a massive scale, the third era is contending with the effects of that scale.

Sundar Pichai is getting a hefty pay raise.

The new Alphabet Inc. chief executive officer will receive $240 million in stock awards over the next three years if he hits all of his performance targets, as well as a $2 million annual salary beginning in 2020, the firm said Friday in a filing.
If Alphabet shares outperform the S&P 100 Index, Pichai could receive an additional $90 million in stock grants. It’s the first time the company has bestowed performance-based stock awards.
His total compensation for 2018 was $1.9 million, according to the Bloomberg Pay Index.

This makes the CEO of Google’s parent company one of the world’s highest-paid executives, according to Bloomberg.

Most of the compensation came in the form of stock awards, which means the definitive total depends on the company’s stock return relative to other S&P 100 businesses.
